First snowfall of the season (that I've noticed) last night, leaving a bit of dusting visible from Reno.

Well I had fantasies of cutting out of work early to drive to Truckee, but that's probably not going to happen.

There's another thread up on the front page, anyone else going?

Hmn. I wasn't going to see Deeper. Thought I'd wait for Light the Wick.
But, I just saw that you get a Comp for Alpine Meadows at Deeper.

I wonder how restricted the Comp is?

Assuming that you'll be bussing it during the high season, and getting your tix as part of that, the restrictions probably don't matter.

    haha

that's pretty funny that they're giving comp ski passes for seeing a film focused on skiing the backcountry and venturing "past the boundaries of helicopters, snowmobiles, and lifts to explore untouched realms."

yea, i guess. more appropriate i'd think would be a discount for an avi course or something along those lines. of course, if i were to see the film, i'd prefer the comp pass

    Thanks...was a mini-adventure, to be sure.

It def helped that I drove around the area the week before for about 2 hours trying a variety of different logging roads, but you are correct in that they overlap, offshoot, and dead-end. It is confusing, to say the least.

Adding to that is that a lot of the roads are in great condition for a stretch, then they are overgrown or dead-end, only to pick up again several hundred yards later, clean and well-kept! Crazy.

I crossed at least 5 different logging roads up along the ridge during my hike, but given my late start I didn't have the time to follow them to see where they ended up.

I can only imagine the confusion that having the area covered in snow would cause!

Still, as I mentioned before, there is some great potential in that area and it's pretty easy to access the base area (it's just getting up to the ridge that can be a hassle unless you're sledded out).

I may try to navigate around some more this coming week depending on my schedule.

It looks like it's 2 for 1 Comps at the Truckee Premiere, tonight, and 1 Comp at Mondays SF show.
Says something about logging on with your ticket info to claim the lift-tix.

I remember one comp I got for Heavenly, that was so resticted I couldn't use it. Like only valid a couple of weeks in February, or such like

I recall that in year's past the Heavenly tix you got at the Warren Miller films were only good weekdays (Mon - Fri) and were also restricted in terms of holidays.

That seems to be the regular modus operandi. For example, last season I got a free Bear Valley ticket from some trade show and it was only good Mon-Fri non-holidays. I never got to use it since it was such a hassle to get to BV from Truckee...

    PSA:

cloud seeding article and dates of related seminars in tahoe area.

cloud seeding has been occurring in CA since the 50's and apparently has significantly augmented CA's snowpack. It sounds like the 20 oct seminar in incline village will discuss these activities in details.

^^ that's a cool map. thanks for the responses. that map indicates many projects still occurring, but the DRI ones ended. Interesting. I'm curious if DRI is restarting? makes the intent of that seminar more intriguing, no? it's worth noting that the locations on that map do not indicate where the seeding is occurring.

Hit up Lola again today for some Bacardi De La Soul action (day 151, 3 runs).

It's getting burnt, but still skiable (if making 6 medium sized turns fits your definition of skiable).

Can't tell if somebody else was up there or if my lines from last week were still visible (I came across a ton of recent hiking boot prints on the hike up).

Good news is that I tried a new logging road and cut my approach by an hour and 5 minutes. Will probably hit it up again next week and try yet another road to get even closer.

Not too shabby for September, though.

    204's are for sissies...

@ Schralph: I got to the top of the patch, took my skis from my pack, laid them in what I thought was a safe place, however when I reached down to grab one (with the boot still in it, no less), it slipped and whizzed down the patch, flew off the patch and into a field of boulders and scree. I lodged itself about a couple hundred feet from where the patch ended. I was already barefoot, so I had to put my hiking boots back on, load up my remaining ski, and hike around the patch and down to retrieve my ski.

Second time I've had a runaway this season. Woot!
