Fly Fishing in Honduras:  “Beyond the Horizon”

Nestled in the remote natural paradise of Guanaja, Honduras, the Fly Fish Guanaja Lodge has been changing lives of the local community.

Although this a stunning landscape is rich with character, Guanaja’s population of 5,500 has a dark side. Many of the inhabitants struggle with poverty.

Steven Brown originally sought the area to open his remote fly fishing business. While that still remains his main goal, his business has changed the course of the small island’s future by providing new jobs for locals and slowly improving livelihoods.

In his film, Beyond the Horizon, director Jon “JK” Klaczkiewicz tells the story of Rankin Jackson, a Guanaja resident who found a new purpose in his life and financial stability in becoming a fly fishing guide alongside Brown, after years of drug running.

The film follows the two friends as they embark on a mission to access the valuable and remote permit fishery, one of the few indigenous fish in the keys that is still flourishing while other species’ populations are declining. The trek to the fishery is dangerous and dicey, but the untapped resources of this fisher’s paradise is worth the journey.

The film reminds lovers of fishing that the sport is much more than the fish, rod, and fly: it’s about the people you meet along the way, the unpredictable paths that cross, and a connection to the sea that will last a lifetime.
