Free Solo was nominated for Best Feature Documentary, alongside the films Hale County This Morning This Evening, Minding the Gap, Of Fathers and Sons, and RBG. It is Chin and Vasarhelyi’s first nomination for an Academy Award. The film has already amassed more than $13 Million in box office sales, and 14 other awards from film festivals around the world.
