Meet the 2018 TGR Hall of Fame: Julie Zell and “Sick” Rick Armstrong

Welcome to the Hall of Fame Julie Zell and Rick Armstrong!

Last Thursday, at TGR’s annual Family Dinner celebration, the next round of TGR Hall of Fame inductees was announced: snowboarder Julie Zell and skier “Sick” Rick Armstrong. Both athletes were integral in the early work of TGR, showcasing their skiing in the Tetons and beyond. They join Micah Black, Doug Coombs, and Kent Kreitler in filling out the current Hall of Fame roster. Each year, past and current athletes gather together to vote on their entries.

Julie Zell:

As one of the Teton’s OG snowboard legends, Zell’s career has been long and storied. And if this season has been any indication, it’s not over yet! Zell broke ground for women in snowboarding back in the 90’s with banger segments in TGR’s Continuum, Harvest, Uprising, and The Big One. Her pioneering descents in Alaska won her three titles at the coveted Valdez big mountain freeride competition The King and Queen of the Hill, from 1994-1996.

Outside of Alaska, she also competed in giant slalom races at an international level, and raced in snowboard cross. These days, Zell is busy being a mom to her son Ronan, and finding ways to squeeze in some time on her board, like competing in (and winning) the Beartooth Basin summer big mountain compeitiong.

Rick Armstrong:

As a fixture of TGR’s films for many years, “Sick” Rick Armstrong’s reputation precedes him. Armstrong’s TGR segment resume includes parts in the films Continuum, and Harvest, featuring skiing from classic Jackson Hole lines to insane first descents in Alaska.

These days, Armstrong is busy raising a family in Jackson Hole and instilling his love of the mountains in his daughters. His daughter Ellie Snow is fully immersed in the life of a competitive big mountain skier, but loves nothing more than getting out for a ski day with her dad.
