2007 Marmot Precip Jacket - Opinions?

So I'm looking for a rain shell for light hiking, climbing approaches, and climbing in light rain. I read a few bad reviews about the old Marmot Precip Jackets saying that they were not very waterproof and leaked at the arms.

The 2007 versions say they do have improved waterproofness.

Any opinions? REI has a khaki color Precip for $70. The price is attractive but I'm wondering if I should spring for the Marmot Oracle at $160. I'd rather not spend that much, but if the jacket is much better then it might be worth it.

I just got the Marmot Impulse jacket but have yet to test it out. I won't be much help until it stops being sunny and dry around here.

Maybe not what you want to hear, but I have the Oracle and its the tits. So if you do wind up shelling out the coin, rest assured it's a solid purchase.

I had the old Pre-cip -- probably still do but can't find it. I liked it alot. Any rain jacket isn't going to get rid of all the sweat and will feel wet inside if not properly vented when your working hard (hiking, etc). Some may like other jackets better and there probably is better out there. But I liked the Pre-cip. I would be that people who said they leaked were probably just feeling sweat but you never know. Mine never leaked.

Why don't you just get the normal Precip jacket that's like $100? I love my 2 precip jackets.... I use them frequently for skiing this time of year... for camping, climbing, biking, everything....

Another "Precip works fine for me" comment.

Really, I do like the jacket and while I use it for hiking if the rain happens to come out (mind you, I try to hike when it's dry) it works really well on my walks to and from the train station for commuting purposes when the sky opens up!

I've had the pre-cip and the MTH Epic, and I have to say, I like the Epic more. Feels better against my skin and I think it breathes better. They're about the same price too. The Epic is a little longer, which I like for days when it's really pouring.

I like the older pre-cip I have. It works well in light rain for a log time and heavy rain for a short time. Just not eavy rain for a long time.
Damn, we're in a tight spot!

I have a 2005 PreCip, and while it doesn't leak it is something of a sweat bucket and feels like a trash bag against bare skin. I don't like it in the summertime.

Ditto. The $35 price tag at the time didn't hurt.

I debated that sentence, and then decided to go with it anyway.

I can't speak to the PreCip, but I have the Oracle and it's served me very well. I've been skiing in hard rain in it and stayed dry and cool. I've been very satified with it.

I do kind of wish that it's pockets were higher though. Their low placement means they're somewhat blocked by your backpack's hipbelt.

Had the Marmot PreCip Rim Jacket back in 2004-ish. Worked great for about a year and a half, then had the area around the cuffs and collar start wearing off. The rubbery cover started cracking and peeling. I think that can all be avoided with some good care, like washing, which I neglected to do

I bought an Arc'teryx Beta jacket on discount around the same time that the Precip started flaking on me. I can't stop saying good things about it. It's a little more extreme than the Precip is, but that's OK by me. After about two straight seasons of use, something bad finally happened to it, and it's all easily repairable by myself: the drawstring on the waist lost one of the little clasp ends. But yeah, price-wise Marmot is great and durable.

Yup, that's how I rate my Precip as well... Plus it fit's like a garbage-bag... Shite, for climbing the arms are way, way too short and still I could fit two peeps the size of my inside the torso.... Now I mostly use it with my softshell (or rather not use, it stays in the backpack until a really severe downpour occurs), and during the summer I'll rather pack my old Beta AR or just use something that that is water repellent and windproof...

All in all, my biggest gripe with the Precip is the "last", it's seems to be made for really overweight peeps walking their dog... The fit just doesn't seem to work with anything more than standing around (and I ain't no skinny @ ~5'9ish and between 155 and 160 lbs).

I've had no issues with the precip. I wear mine year round, using it in the summer for backpacking and as my outer shell in the wintertime while skiing. Never leaked on me and as stated before, if you're hiking, skinning, etc. its inevitable that you will sweat and NO jacket will allow all the sweat to escape.

I'd be interested to try something else that's as light and compact. The problem, I think, is that with it's light and compact design, there's no internal fabric, and you end up with the laminated material against your body, which isn't all that comfortable and I think it probably accentuates the feeling of your sweat against your skin.
