I wonder how many winxp laptops that are five years old and still being used as the primary computer in the house. My titanium G4 is always on and has been running flawlessly for nearly five years. My 1st gen Ipod is still kicking all 1000 songs too.
Those Apples don't become obsolete as fast.
I have an old HP laptop that was a refurb at home still going after five years. Maybe I'm in the minority... dunno. That being said I think the next home laptop will be a macbook for no particular reason other then they seem like pretty sweet machines.
There is now almost no difference in hardware. It's great you've had a positive experience with your mac, but as has been mentioned by others above, most of the alleged positives of a mac come down to user preference and proficiency, not fact. Those Apples don't become obsolete as fast.
Laptops are hard. Apple's look great, and are okay price wise. I hate the operating system. The base MacBook costs $1100, and comes with a 1.83 Core 2 Duo processor, 512MB memory, 13.1" screen, and 60gb 5400rpm hard drive. For the same price, you could pick up a Dell D520 with 2.0 Core 2 duo, 1GB memory, 14" screen, and 60gb 7200rpm hard drive. These are pretty significant differences. The Dell looks decent.
I wish I could travel back in time 4 years and show you this quote. You were such a hater when I lived with you.
Edit: Oh, and I don't know if anyone mentioned it, but refurbs have the same warranty as new machines. So do any demos or "refreshed" machines you can get at any Apple Store (www.apple.com/retail). You just have to call and ask for refreshed or demo machines. They are typically cheaper then refurbs and also carry the same warranty as a new machine. I know 20" imac core duo demo/refresh price is $899 right now (that's cheap in case you don't know).

ROBOTS ARE EATING MY FACE.

Price match this bitch to Staples = $549 After rebate.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.
People should learn endurance; they should learn to endure the discomforts of heat and cold, hunger and thirst; they should learn to be patient when receiving abuse and scorn; for it is the practice of endurance that quenches the fire of worldly passions which is burning up their bodies.
