    Nikon v. Canon DSLR - Redux (D40 v. XTi)

OK, I posted this question last April:

    http://www.tetongravity.com/forums/s...highlight=dslr

I got an overwhelming response from the board. Thanks again to all who helped me agonize over and finally make my decision. My Rebel XT and I are still happily together, though sometimes I get caught ogling the 30D.

On my drive back from ripping and shredding the extreme gnar of Colorado over the holiday break, I stopped to see a friend in Grand Junction. He played with the camera and has been obsessing over the same question for the last 3 weeks. He called upon me to help assuage his anxiety. I culled what I could from the above post, but the question has evolved over the last nine months.

I'm sold on Canon and am now invested in their glass myself, but I am inquiring on behalf of another. So, maggots, I now ask you: D40 or XTi?
I should want to cook him a simple meal, but I shouldn't want to cut into him, to tear the flesh, to wear the flesh, to be born unto new worlds where his flesh becomes my key.

Pricewise that doesn't seem like a fair comparison. The D80 is closer in price to the XTi (though on the other side).

Fair enough. However, these are the two he's narrowed it down to. So, I guess the question becomes: is the XTi worth the extra $200?

30d is $1159 at bhphoto, buy a lens you can get anywhere from a $230-$300 mail in rebate which could bring your 30d price to as low as $859. or rather his..

i just did this debate — well sorta — and came to this conlusion...

go out to a camera store and hold and mess around with the two. decide which feels best to you and which you think you'd be more likely to grab and actually use. buy the body only and get a better than kit lens.

for me that was the D50. canons faster FPS was nice, but they felt like junk in my hand and i don't think i'd be as excited about using it as much. the 30D was nicer feeling, but cost a bunch more. the D40 was the new hot item, but was really small. for me the D50 was just sort of "right" so i got it, have been shooting with it almost every day and really enjoying it.

the moral of my story, get what you think you would like to use the most and then go use the damn thing instead of freating about which is better.
