    Winter Cocktails

    We have a summer cocktail thread but I couldn't find a specific winter cocktail thread.

    What do you folks like when it's cold and stormy? I find the typical cocktails that get consumed around my house are simple and refreshing like Gin and Tonic, or the occasional martini. Maybe a martini is an acceptable winter cocktail but I don't really have anything in my repertoire that screams winter.

    Give me some ideas?

    I find a Boulevardier (rye negroni), Negroni, Vieux Carre, to be tasty winter morsels.

    Yeah, winter is a good time for the strong drinks.

    Sazerac and ‘Improved’ whiskey cocktail are also good as far as that goes.

    Brooklyn (Manhattan-ish: rye, amer picon, maraschino, vermouth)

    Very dirty dry gin martini

    Egg Nog n bourbon (seasonal of course)

    If you want to do a wintry gin and tonic check out the I Love Christmastime Thread - I’ve got a cranberry G&T recipe in there with a sprig of rosemary that makes it fit the colder temps.

    Boulevardier is my spot also. Equal parts OG114, Carpano Antica, and Leopold Bros Aperitive with a big cube. Decent

    Flips, spiced tiki drinks, and milk punches. I drink a lot of white wine with a touch of residual sugar around the holidays and like using some as part of a drink. If you are more a clear liquor fan you may look for Danish aquavit or even unaged rye from somewhere local. An Old Tom riff on gin cocktails or even a Martinez is also welcome. A bijou with Old Tom and a vermouth that is more cutting than Antica is particularly nice.

    A rum toddy or Becherovka and tonic are the two things I drink the most this time of year. B&T with an orange twist is the best.

    I drink margaritas all year. I do like to drink scotch in the winter, but that is not a cocktail.

    Bourbon, maple syrup, lemon juice (maybe [emoji640]:[emoji637]:[emoji637]?), cinnamon.


    Also goes well with black tea if you’re so inclined.

    I made a batch of Alton Brown's aged egg nog back in September. Didn't touch it until a week ago, and it's AMAZING.

    It's got a lot of booze in it, but really after the 2 months it's very mellow and delicious. Probably like 800 calories per small glass, though. Lots of cream and sugar in there.

    It's the classics for me; Hot Toddy, hot buttered rum, egg nog + bourbon, and some single malt scotch.

    I really like Negroni's and can enjoy a well made Old Fashion or Manhattan. My wife does not particularly care for any whiskey based cocktails nor things that are too bitter.

    Also, as much as I love a well crafted cocktail, I don't make them enough to justify having a bar full of tons of obscure alcohol. I tend to stick to things that have minimal simple ingredients.

    A couple years ago I found a recipe for a cocktail that the author was calling the Christmas Lady. It's 1.5oz gin, 3/4oz fresh orange juice, 3/4oz fresh lemon juice, 1/2 oz rosemary simple syrup. Shake and strain into a coupe. Simple, delicious, besides the rosemary simple syrup (which can be replaced with regular simple syrup) it contains things that I likely have on hand already. It's good but I need to expand my repertoire.

    Not sure if it’s a thing already but I recently came up with a good brown liquor drink. Basically made an old fashioned but with aged rum (costco) instead of whiskey and instead of citrus and sugar I used half a dried, sugared pineapple slice and threw a cinnamon stick in as well. It was a good sipper.
