THE Aspen/Snowmass / Greater Roaring Fork Valley 23-24 Thread

Thanks Jay. Myers pricing is insane! Would love a 7 ski, but $2k?

My understanding (from chatting with Cracks and Racks peeps) is that the Gravirax guy started his biz in spite of the Myers' ripoff situation and to prove you could make the same or superior product for considerably less. Not sure on their contact info though, sorry.

Gretch: what size are those tires?

And yes: 24-25 thread time has come!

I have emailed them twice about picking up a ski rack (I am in basalt, as are they) so I don’t have to pay $100in shipping.

No response and it’s been several weeks.

Wife’s vehicle she got this summer is too tall for the topper we used on our Outback (both for garage and her getting skis down).

    Thanks!

Also, if any local mags want snow tires for their Subaru, let me know. Free and lots of tread. Were on a 2012 Outback.

Their business is based out of their house in Willits, maybe knock on their door? I know, that may seem very 1997

Thanks, I also left a message. Found an old version of Meyers of $500, but may have already sold.

I like that the Myer’s swings instead of tips for my wife getting in and out of the back…but twice as much is a bit rich for me.

Tire info. Free if you want to pick them up. Rather they get used.

Nice, we skied down that at about 11:15. Great turns, but I could’ve used a bit more ski for the denser snow. Highlands did not disappoint!

Yeah, there was almost a graupel skin on the top. The Cat compacted pass on the upper half of Thunder Bowl was the best skiing I found.

Snowmass isn’t in bad shape. High alpine has a good amount of snow.

Training on Golden Horn / T Bowl to commence Saturday.
The flagship mountain will open on Saturday the 23rd.
One of you should probably launch the 24-25 thread.

Advice Please. Taking my tenth grade daughter to Aspen for MLK weekend and need some advice. Plan is aggressive either way but not my first rodeo and am used to lots of driving (including heavy snow). Will rent Turo either way with snows/chains and AWD etc... Plan A. Fly to Eagle non stop Saturday morning can be on mtn for lunch all goes well. All day Sunday/Monday/ and tuesday fly home around lunch (NYC). Staying in Basalt. Plan B. fly to Denver Friday night, stay in Denver. Drive to Aspen first thing AM Saturday, then same plan except Monday evening would head back to Frisco and hit copper Tuesday half day (or could be any Ikon/indy mtn) then Denver for evening flight home. Plan A is much easier, flights double the cost and less skiing. Plan B gets extra half day on mtn, airfare half price, LOTS more driving and variables that could screw trip and extra day at some elevation. Been to Colorado many times and never had altitude issues but you never know. Flying into Aspen makes no sense, no nonstop and more then flying nonstop to Eagle. Never been to Aspen its dad giving into daughter for aggressive timeframe. Ha. Thank you for any advice

THE Aspen/Snowmass / Greater Roaring Fork Valley 23-24 Thread

Direct to EGE is hard to beat.
    Check out return from ASE,
    might get your extra day.
    Don't fuck with Denver.

Maybe try to stay in Aspen or Snowmass if possible, but Basalt's not bad.

    New thread started.

Tks Shredhead. I hadnt thought of that and actually looks like great idea. Can get flight out of ASP at 320 (even less money then the direct from ege) so saves tuesday morning. Maybe bail on car if can figure out how to get from EGE to aspen. and stay in aspen then.

That would be the call. You can get a one way rental on orbits for $62.
The drive is pretty easy 1 1/2 hours.
Dropping the car at ASE. Is easy with a free bus back to town or Snowmass.

Hopefully last follow up, tks in advance. Stay in Aspen or Snowmass? Both very strong intermediates but lets also be real here, daughter is into the shopping/dining etc, ha. so this is a skiing/enjoying aspen priority. The obv answer would be to stay in aspen but from a value perspective, stay in snowmass and take the bus? 20 minutes? Big fan of buses so not a deterrent just curious of time. Obv in 2 full days and two half days wont get to experience the mtns but just a taste. Was staying in basalt as am a marriot guy and the element there looks good and good value compared to what i saw in Aspen. appreciate that help!!

If you're a bus guy, the Basalt location probably wouldn't be terrible - bus stop is right next to the hotel. Quick ride up to Brush Creek PnR where you can transfer to the Snowmass bus or stay on the Aspen bus up into town. Spend the $$ you saved on nice dinners in Aspen proper.

When we ski the RFV we almost always stay in Basalt and drive to the PnR and bus to skiing.

If you're splurging on a trip here and you can afford to stay in Aspen, stay in Aspen, especially to take advantage of your time. Everything is there, walkable and easy. Plus the wow factor for your daughter. I'm all about the bus (I'm a bus driver), but spending 1 hour each day, on a short trip, to go back/forth to Aspen for dinner and shopping adds up. Snowmass is fine but can end up spread out, depending on where you actually stay. You may be way up the hill or down the hill from the Mall or Base Village, where the main cluster of shops and restaurants are. But there is no comparison between what downtown Aspen offers and the Mall+Base Village in Snowmass offer.

Staying in Basalt is very functional for a sleep+ski trip, and way cheaper, but you're not really staying at a ski area/ski town by any means and accessing things beyond sleep+ski basics is a fair amount of time. The Element and Hoffman are both highway-side hotels with a Whole Foods and some restaurants close by and very quick access to the bus, but otherwise a semi-suburban experience.

Great advice all and really appreciate it. Again, its about the daddy daughter time. I will have my own boys bare bones d bag trip. Already booked flight with miles. into ege saturday landing 1030, flying out of aspen 2pm tuesday so can get some runs in the morning. Thinking that staying downtown is way to go. reviews on the aspen mtn lodge? Independent square or pay up? this should be last of the questions, tks!!

Yeah - if you're not too concerned with the budget, downtown ASE is definitely the way to go. Also makes it way quicker to get to the airport after skiing a bit Tuesday. To maximize your time on the snow Tuesday, you should plan to ski Ajax, as there are gobs of busses that go from Rubey Park to the airport...

    I agree with everyone.

Stay in town if you can.
Most activities, best access to the ski resorts, incredible restaurants.

You'll like skiing Snowmass the most. But if you stay there, you might not leave, ever.

The Element is a fine property, super convenient. Enough good restaurants nearby for a week.
But you'll probably be too tired to go back into town.

Look at the Mountain Chalet in Aspen or Snowmass.
