How are you carrying bear spray?

I've tried a couple of ways and nothing that I'm super happy with for ease of accessibility and not being in the way. Water bottle conversion thing doesn't work with Counter Assault as the can is a little too fat.

Jersey pocket for me. That way, I have it off the bike during breaks.

I am interested in this one from Whitefish. In the bike mount, I know lots of people who use this one.

I usually just apply it on before I head out.

Water bottle conversion, or in the hip belt of my fanny pack. I prefer the water bottle.

I know some people have gotten fatter cans of bear spray to fit in a water bottle by boiling the water bottle a bit to make it soft and then just cramming the bear spray in.

I ordered one of these through a buddy who did a group buy https://ghostriderequipment.com/

Just came in last week so haven't seen it or tried it out yet, but seems to check a lot of boxes.

Tucked it into the shirt if I felt like it was bouncing around too much, worked ok for my first MTB experience out west.

Doesn’t it bounce around annoyingly mounted in that spot?

I don't have good photo, but bag has strap down to fork crown. So no motion at all.

Interesting. Thx. I’ve only seen them mounted on shoulder straps which seemed pretty easy to access

I use the feedbag/stem bag with a buff at the bottom to keep it padded. My buddy had one of these on a big ride and it looked slick: https://www.formatde.co/

Ditto for me. Works better than any other method I tried.

I like this one from Revelate.

We sell these in store. They are awesome if you are looking to carry on the bike.

I'm kind of leaning that way, but there are three votes for the handlebar bag, so....I can see pros and cons both ways.

I ride with one of these hip packs- https://www.osprey.com/us/en/product...209&nulsc=true

I have a standard counter assault bear spray holster that I've looped into the compression straps on the side of the pack. It works pretty well.

I've always just carried in my baggy shorts pocket, that way it comes with me off the bike...

BUT that's not overly comfy so I can see the allure of a food bag which could be used for water/snacks when not riding in bear country.

Those Revelate ones look nice, but spendy.

This site seams to have a large number of foodbags to compare and a few cheaper options:

Depends if you need that water bottle holder for water on a long ride...

I used a Curtis E Bear holder from Theif Bikepacking. It's like a feedback but specifically for spray. He is on vacation right now so the site is closed but here's the Facebook link.

Spray specific bags are cool but I like being able to also fit other stuff in there like my Houdini, patch kit, energy bar, multitool, etc. Feed bag along with my water bottle in a holder is really all I need for lots of rides.

In regard to the spray-size water bottle holders, IMO the increased bumping/jarring on the spray is not a good thing. Bag holds it softly. Also it's easier to get at and could be sprayed without even taking it out of the bag if necessary.

There's 1 that is basically a plastic adapter that holds the spray can, and then clicks securely into a water bottle holder. I think they sell for $20+, but my friend had a 3D printer and printed a few and gave me one. So the plans are online somewhere.
It's not letting me upload a picture.

My young pup and I flushed a large black bear early this morning. We were moving pretty fast, on some curvy wooded single track.
My pup was about ten yards ahead and I saw him alert, a split second before I saw the bear.

Luckily, the bear just bolted into the woods.

The whole episode was 3-4 seconds.
If the bear came after me. I never would have had time to deploy the bear spray. If he’d gone after the dog, I might have, depending on how involved it got.

I don’t carry spray and don’t really plan on it at this point.

Yeah, I'm not packing for black bears.
