    Leather Glove Treatment

    Didn't find previous threads, other than using sno seal on Kinco gloves. I have a couple of pairs of gloves that need some TLC and I have mink oil and beeswax at home. So just wondering how well mink oil or beeswax would work on gloves as I'd rather use what I have instead of getting some specific product shipped to me?

    Beeswax. Oil is for engines.
    Grab some Kenetrek boot wax for next time. I prefer it over snoseal.

    sno seal is fine, i seem to remember a wax base waterproofer is > mink oil but i don't remember why ?

    Apply by grip a heat gun or hair dryer between your knees so you can scoop out product & rub it in with both hands at once

    Sort term, mink oil makes it more pliable. Over time tho, it will harden and the leather will break down.
    Beeswax is the thing for waterproofing

    But beeswax is the thing for waterproofing
    Correct. Get snoseal or similar on there and you'll build up a layer. The Mink oil makes them dexterous and has some protection properties, but will degrade the leather faster.

    Put your burner on on your stove;

    Put your gloves on;

    Grab a bunch of gunk;

    Work in with both hands waving across burner.

    Apply more gunk as necessary.

    Lol waving across burner. what a dumb idea.

    Heat oven to 225. Turn off. Put gloves in oven to preheat, then remove gloves from oven, put them on and apply product while preheating oven again. Turn oven off and put gloves back in for 20min. Repeat. Done.

    i put a piece of clean 1/4" cab ply in the oven (any clean flat surface will work; wood is great cuz it won't scorch the leather; try a wood cutting board)
    turn the oven on to its lowest operating temp (170F, in my case)
    set a couple pairs of gloves, mittens in there
    & pull one out at a time, wax & put back
    works great
    clean the oven door handle so that your SO doesn't bitch at you for the waxy residue

    FYI.
    As much as I love free the powder gloves. Their leather balm made all our gloves moldy. Back to Sno seal for me.

    Thanks. I'll try beeswax first, and get Sno Seal for next time. Online prices are pretty stupid for Sno Seal right now.

    I've only been using this method for over 20 years. Throwing them in the oven does not work nearly as well. LOL.

    $7 at ace hardware is too much? GTFO.

    And no, ya don't put the wax on the breathable part unless you want to suffocate your hands.

    Me - Elk hide gloves in the oven long enough to warm up, slather, back in for a few then out, work it in and let them room dry overnight. Never wear liners in my unlined gloves, all winter in JH. I swear that elk has insulative properties and you'll be hard pressed to wear through them.

    I've also never had an issue doing it this way. Seems to work fine and is quicker than the oven, which I've admittedly never tried.

    But i also usually hit the breathable parts as well and have never noticed an issue, so YMMV

    Nevermind, found some at local brick and mortar for $10. And spendy in my case means paying $30 on Bezos' shop for something that should cost $10.

    You can also use saddle soap to condition them prior to sealing, like Kiwi. To “seal”/treat for water resistance I like hestra balm which doesn’t require heat and seems to condition the leather better but whatevs. I’ve used snoseal after hestra and it’s good that way. Snoseal alone has worked for me too but I’d also like above use some kinda mild heat with snoseal. Fwiw snoseal says “beeswax treatment” on the lid.

    Here’s the hestra balm ingredients:

    ive used nikwax, snoseal, hestra and obenauf's LP.
    i find the snoseal is the best waterproofer, but it does tend to make your gloves stiff.

    i'll basically alternate between snoseal and obenauf's LP.
    snoseal when they're not as waterproof as i'd like and obenauf's when i want to restore some suppleness into the leather.

    That’s good info on the Obenauf LP. Especially since you get 2 times the amount for the same price as hestra.

    I agree with this.

    However, I’ve found that even with a very generous application of Sno Seal it’s still not going to be waterproof, and Sno Seal will make the leather stiffer. I now just use balm to condition my leather gloves, and if I’m out on a day where I’m worried they’d soak thru I just wear a (cheaper) pair of gloves with an actual waterproof membrane instead.
