So I have pretty shitty feet when it comes to skiing. The largest problem with my foot is the height of my instep. Even with punching, grinding, etc. my instep is so high that I usually hardly ever buckle my instep buckle more than the loosest click. I frequently cut plastic off tongues, grind boot boards, and otherwise break my boots to get less pressure on my instep.
If you find yourself in a similar situation, try out the Atomic Hawx boot. They come in 3 different last widths, and the material they use is extremely punchable.
Throw away the stock liner though, its garbage, and it is too thick in the instep, so it does away with the benefits of the shell design.
I am currently using the HAWX ultra 130 shell with a Zipfit liner. I have cut some plastic of the inside of the instep of the tongue of the zipfit, but that's all the instep mods I will need to do I think. I think I might have to grind the big toe area, but that's probably it.
The same goes for the Hawx Ultra XTD. Decently high shell instep, but the liner swallows up all that space. I had great success cutting the plastic off the tongue on a liner from a K2 Pinnacle boot in the XTD. I needed zero other boot work.
I am always looking for other boots to try, as I have never felt like I had the perfect boot. Any recommendations besides full custom boots?
