    Smart Wool Running Socks

STP used to have great deals on below-the-ankle wool running socks but they are harder to find lately. I've had Smart Wool, Patagonia, and a few others and Smart Wool seem to hold up the best with less pilling; probably because they have the most wool content. Where are you guys buying?

Darn Tough, point6. Both blow smartwool out of the water on comfort and durability.

Smartwool socks, IMO, are overpriced junk. Mine have always worn out just as fast as much cheaper brands.

I've read complaints about Smartwool online but still have three pair that are probably eight years old and in great shape. Looks like current Smartwool running socks 55% wool which is reduced from years past if I recall correctly. The Darn Toughs are 50%. Made in the USA is cool. Maybe worth a try given the feedback here.

Adding to the echo chamber, Darn Tough. Very comfortable and have lasted longer than I ever expected wool to.

I've had my patagucci wools socks for years and still going strong.

I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...

Never had a pair of smartwool last more than a year of regular running rotation. Darn tough lasts a bit longer and replaces worn out pairs for free. Depends on how heavy your usage though I guess.

Looks like I need to try a pair of the Darn Toughs. Are you all buying from the company website?

Yep. Darned Tough Made in the USA. I just tossed the last of 3 dozed Made in the USA wool crew socks that I bought in 1978. Funny, adjusted for inflation they cost the same as Darned Tough. But I got them at wholesale.

STP is sometimes times selling irregular or seconds since they are a closeout, deal and prior years merchandise company. They also are owned by TJ Maxx and Marshalls so the products they have sometimes gets sent into those brick and mortar stores too (plus STP is opening stores too.) Not sure if it was on this board somewhere or elsewhere that I read a thread about the sources for Darned Tough at better pricing than directly off their web site. For ski socks I used to for years wore Thorlo and they also make running and hiking socks (as well as other sports specific) - 3 different cushion weights and mix of materials differ.

Thanks for the links and info. Pulled the trigger on the Smartwools at $9.50/pair at REI. I'll report back if they blow through so you guys can harangue me. Will keep the DTs in mind during their clearance next month.

try darn toughs when you get the chance
I sometimes buy other socks to try them out but pretty much always end up disappointed compared to dt's

Although for running I have super blister issues so I usually run in injinji's which are awesome too if anyone else here has that issue as they have fixed the problem for me
they are individual toe socks though so I probably wouldn't wear them for everyday use like I do normally- basically barefoot or darn toughs
