I'm still running to the store in my 99 A4 2.8 Avant with 215k. The autolock died but the air conditioner still blows ice cold.

This will be interesting to watch. The vague “significant work” descriptions might keep people away.

Good buddy of mine wants to sell his 08 Saab 93 Aero Sportcombi. 6 speed and xwd. 150k miles. It has some basic go fast mods, VTuner0, BSR intake and exhaust, Maptune intercooler. He's an engineer for Hasbro and takes pretty meticulous care of his stuff.

Wants 12k for it. Would buy for my wife who has a 100 mile round trip commute 5 days a week for six months a year, but works from home the remainder. Hoping it would be reliable for 3-4 years then I'd probably put it up on cars and bids and see what I could get for it. We have a Lexus GX470 and a Toyota Tundra as other cars, so worst case if this was in the shop there would still be a vehicle to drive.

What say the collective? The smart money is probably just buy a Rav4 hybrid and be done with it but if this car is semi-reliable it actually pencils pretty well to just buy this for hopefully 11k and run it for 3-4 years. Crazy?

Some parts will be challenging to find but if there's an option while you're searching I'd go for it. It's a really nice car to be in for road trips.

former saab lover - I loved that car - I don't think i would want a front wheel drive car at that price

This one is the XWD model, Saab's version of AWD. Based on some internet sleuthing the price seems to be on the high side but I trust my bud's conviction when it comes to being pedantic about maintenance. That said, its probably not going to get me my money back when I inevitably sell it.

While price may seem high, it's ALSO a pretty rare specimen. Personally, I'd be all over it as this may be one your last chances to own a neat piece of automotive history. THAT SAID, being a Saab and all, fully expect it to become a PITA, parts hard to source at time, and increasingly expensive to keep up, but as long as you view the initial outgo as a sunk cost, then whatever. Hell, you can lose $12K in depreciation in the first few months alone on many brand new vehicles. I'd say if you squeeze out a couple good years of happy fun times out of it then it blows up, then you got your money's worth. Who knows though? It might surprise you with decent reliability. Especially since it was evidently well-maintained.

If this is the Sportcombi Turbo X with the 6MT, then it is EXCEEDINGLY rare. They were rare back in 2008, let alone 2024.

The Saab 9-3 Turbo X Might Be the Rarest Car I’ve Ever Driven
    https://www.autotrader.com/car-news/...-driven-273416
"Of the 600 sold in the U.S., 243 Turbo X units were equipped with a manual transmission, and 122 of the 600 were of the SportCombi (wagon) variety, of which only 39 came with a manual — by far the rarest configuration."

Would a Rav4 be the more reliable, sensible choice? Sure, but they're also an entirely forgettable experience. For me personally, I'd 100% take the quirky Saab over the Rav4. I know I'm a glutton for automotive punishment though so do what's right for you. Car sounds like it'd be an absolute blast to own. Then come join us over in the wrenching thread.

Based on those numbers I'd say you might even make a few dollars if you use it then sell it in a few years when it'll be even more rare. Ask your buddy what the typical issues with them might be then collect a few of those parts so you have them when needed. Keep an eye open for bumper covers, they're bound to be unobtainium by now. If Iwas already thinking of spending $30k on something new (and boring AF) I'd drop the $12 and think to myself that I have a helluva cushion to keep it working well and looking good.

That's precisely the way I view these things! My Mercedes lost over $45K by the time I got it. That difference buys a TON of maintenance that I would never even come close to reaching, even if it needed major things like engine/trans swaps. Still coming out ahead overall.

Its an aero, so not one of those, but build data shows it is actually even rarer. They only made 38 of them in the aero sportcombi manual transmission guise. It does have the B50 leather interior option which I must say, is very nice.

Its on its original clutch, and sure enough, that part looks unobtainium. Backordered everywhere..... That might kill this deal.

    Really? https://eeuroparts.com/product/sachs...1?gad_source=1
Sachs is likely what came from the factory too. Link is assuming I have the model right of course. Either way, some quick Googling tells me you'll be able to source your clutch. Just won't be something available right away at your local Autozone.

Sweet, I hadn't tried that source. FCP euro has a non-oem one apparently as well. We could be back in business here.

Hell yeah. I'd say shoot first, ask questions later. Otherwise, it may always end up being "the one that got away."

Then again, I have a reputation for buying cars that blow their tops a month later, so take my advice with a large grain of salt.
It was ONE time, guys. But teh TGRs never forgets. And I can now look back it all and laugh at my misfortune. Especially since I got 'er up and running again and been enjoying the heck out of the car for the last 20K miles or so post-op. Phew! Car could've defeated a man less stubborn than myself. Your new Saab could very well have the same fate, but hey, you only live once.

RAV4 = Safe, boring Stepford wife. Does her duties well but only wants missionary and yawns during.
Your new Saab = Firey redhead. You're gonna pay for it, but BOY what a ride.

IKR, nice fella in NH with a V60 polestar was offloading them for a song

I’ll make these my summer wheels; but there’s a lot of meat left on these vikings, almost 8/32”… wondering if I should just swap the tires to the stock rims?

Solid choice, my friend. What crossbars did you end up buying? I need to finally give my E350 the same treatment for Winter is coming.

    Utah?
Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?

So after 15 years we finally made it to Utah.....
