    south america honeymoon ski trip

anyone have any suggestions on skiing south america in the summer?

i'm too busy to do a lot of research. go ahead call me a jong.

    questions:

    1) what resorts in south america have the best terrain?
    2) what resorts in south america are the most reliable for snow?
    3) what is the best time of summer for snow down there?
    4) nothing else really matters except questions 1 & 2 if you ask me
    5) now that I've said #4: for the wife, what resorts offer some kind of nice accommodations and a bit of tranquility when not skiing so we can relax together at night when we're not ripping it up during the day?

like the idea of chilean skiing since we could maybe hit some wineries or something honeymoon-ish. satisfies what she's looking for. she rides too, but isn't quite as passionate about the riding...

looking to spend up to $1000 each. yeah, i know it's our honeymoon, but we just bought a townhouse so money is tight.

    thanks in advance...

    $1000 each
Good luck with that. I am looking at airfare right now to Argentina for $1500 one way. This is from Vancouver though.

If you have flexible dates, use travelocity you can pick flexible dates for big ranges of time, you can find round trip tickets for around 600-800/person depending on where/when you're going.

P.S. you can get significantly cheaper airfair if you're willing to drive to Boston, or someplace w/ a major airport, flying from vermont will run you an extra $300/person

enlosandes apartment outside of bariloche is pretty epic...... overlooking the lake and done really nice! $2000 for two people for a week or two in chile or argentina is def. doable. argentina is cheaper than chile and has better wine and beef.

If you want skiing and wineries though you should look into mendoza. staying in mendoza gives you many different outdoor options and a day or two skiing at los penitentes is easy and other days you can do bike tours to wineries and rock climb. but i didn't find mendoza to be a very attractive city in the winter; think brown.

Bariloche is beautiful, plan and simple. Mountains that run into stunning lakes. it feels like a ski town with plenty of eating options and chocolate shops with good skiing at cerro catedral, road biking and hikes all close by. i didn't find any wineries in the area but there are plenty of breweries and organic farms (that means good food) in the area.

Portillo is going to be speculator. you're in the mountains, literally, and the skiing is top notch. BUT that's it. from what i gather its pretty much all one big resort with just different class hotels. They went you to do the package week that gets you a room and ski passes.

There are some really cool towns in southern chile with ski areas close by and plenty of other attractions. but it will be winter and chances are high for rain down there.

santiago is a big city with plenty to do and skiing an hour or so away......

when i flew to SA, i got a killer deal from LAX and then flew for ~$150 round trip from LAX to SLC on southwest. Probably save me $500 then just trying to fly from SLC. look at rates from any airport you can get to cheaply from where you are and be patient

Dude, the best answere for questions 1 and 2 is: Las Lenas. You can have the best skiing of your life (or the worst). If you are lucky enough to have marte runing and some pow it's a dream. I think that you should take de risk. Be aware that things may became unpleasant if marte is not open. If you want to relax you can spend some days in a finca in mendoza and enjoy some amazing wine.
    Come to argentina!
Also remember that 1 dolar is 3,90 pesos. Exchange rate is on your side (now i'm in aspen skiing and i have to pay atention on that number every time I spend here).

As far as dates, late August and September generally have the most reliable ski conditions.
