Going rate for a 2007 Subaru Outback?

I'm looking at a "previously enjoyed" 2007 Subaru Outback 2.5I, manual transmission, with 18000 miles on it for $21000 CDN. It's the base model.

I know of a bunch of mags drive Subarus wondering if the price sounds fair. I have no idea what it cost new in 07. The guy bought it in the US and brought it up to Canada. Apparently there is a bit of a run around with the warranty as well, it being manufactured in the US but now living in Canada. Means if there is a warranty issue, I have to shell out and send the invoice to US Subaru and hope they cover it. Anyone have any experience with that?

Subaru of Canada is very difficult to deal with, especially regarding warranty work on US cars. There IS an agreement between SOA and COA, but COA are a bunch of dicks. It usually takes SOA calling the Canadian dealership and forcing them to do it before they own up and do the warranty work. I too have a US spec/bought Subaru up here in Canada, actually my second..

    EDIT
Misread the price the first time I wrote this, it does sound a bit steep...

Now that 2010 legacys are out your possible '07 is 3 model years old. Granted it has pretty low miles but 21,000cdn is just too much. You may be able to get a leftover '09 for that price, the Canadian dollar isn't that low right now compared to the US dollar so if you did purchase a new one you might not take that big of a hit.

Just some things to think about but for a base model outback you're paying too much. As a comparison I bought my '05 non-wagon Legacy GT for 16,000 USD, it was 3 model years old, and it retailed for 32,000 USD brand new.

We bought a new, zero miles '07 base model automatic Outback for $19,900 USD in late December 2007. (Straight up cash deal, no trade, no financing etc.)
Damn, we're in a tight spot!

You guys need to remember he is purchasing this in Canada, it will, by default be more expensive. Even if one goes to the States and imports it back to Canada, one should factor a couple grand into the price....

    Still 21k is high.

Thanks for the info fellas. I've been looking around and Outbacks aren't cheap up here. I found a 2007 with 100000kms on it that doesn't look as good as the one I mentioned in the first post and it's listed at $21900.

You can't take that into consideration. Car prices in different markets can not be compared just by comparing the exchange rates. Cars in Canada have pretty much always been more expensive than they should be given the exchange rate. To the OP, honestly I think only people in Canada are going to be able to give you much useful information on whether the price is fair.

do not confuse the asking price with actual sales prices

dealer markup can be 30% on used cars

it looks like you could get this for $5000 cheaper in seattle. if you have to worry about the warranty, that can be a big deal.

There were drops in prices between an 07 and 09. Maybe the guy is valuing it on what he paid when really it should be valued on cost to replace it with a 09/10.

30000 kms, US warranty issues and $21k sounds a bit steep.
It's not so much the model year, it's the high mileage or meterage to keep the youth of Canada happy
