Vermont Camera Works does good work it just takes a while.
I had an error 99 on by 300D for a while and it is often the contacts between the lens and camera being dirty. Take a eraser and try and clean the metal contacts without getting any in the mirror chamber or lens. Hold the camera over your head so it all falls in your eyes instead.
