ANOTHER botched mount - REI this time

Took my new LP's to REI to get them mounted. Said on the form "1cm back from boot center". Talked with the shop guy, said "1cm back".

I get them back and they're mounted 1cm forward!

Seems that the bad mount problem is not limited to small shops.

How much should I ask for?

I said a free remount and $300 cash and I'll be happy. They're calling me tomorrow.

Jesus, how many botched mounts do we have to hear about before people take a small step to make sure these fuckups don't happen?

Uhh, I would be way more worried about Big shops. At least in my experience. Fuck, I have gotten my skis mounted in Marshals old kitchen. Doesn't get much smaller than that.

Just imagine like 30 pairs of skis and many many binders in a 1bd apartment. True gear whorism at its finest!

Exactly, phish.
Shit, we freeballed mounts on the chair ramp at Hood between runs a few years ago, skiing with a drill in our packs.
No pen, no jig. Straight eyeballing them. And they were fine.

This rampant splurge of mounting fuckups reported here lately really irks my ass.
It ain't rocket science, though most of these wannabe techs in the shops would love for the rest of us to think it is.

That's what I do. Sharpie line fixes this problem really fast. As for other mounting problems like crooked mounts, who knows. But for position just mark it yourself.

Sorry to hear about your boards though, that always sucks.

To correct this rash of mounting fuck ups, everyone needs to start demanding new skis when the shop asses up. No exceptions. If they won't pony up, sue their ass. What would you do if you hired a professional to roof your house and they nailed the bottom course on crooked or two inches above the edge? People in business to mount skis should do it right or pay the price.

I put a line or two marks where I want boot center and point to it. "Here"
Going to practice doing my own mounts on some old skis this spring/summer but too much of a pussy to drill into anything worth $

Sharpie marking is the way to go.

That being said, I wouldn't trust REI one bit with any mounting (or any very specific services for that matter). The "Garage Sale" area at the REI flagship store here in Seattle always has a bunch of skis for cheap with "Incorrect Mount" or "Bad Drilling" written on them.

Some really knowledgeable people at REI (skiing and other depts) but it seems like for every star there are ten monkeys...

Given that most of the "bad mount" stories here are about small shops, it seems like you can't trust anyone.

However, I will say that going to a big company like REI for a mount means that if it goes bad, they instantly hop to it and say "Let me get the manager. You want new skis, we buy new skis. You want us to take cash out of the register, no problem" - without me even asking about it first!

Other small places seem to be more like "Oops. We'll just remount that for ya, no problem. What? New skis? STFU, you're lucky we even talk to you" and the maggot has to go through all sorts of runaround, gather evidence, and threaten court to even get them to talk replacement.

REI did say that they had gone all season without a fucked mount.

Have you been to Edgeworks? As far as I know, the owner, Matt, still does all the mounts.

Just curious, what other small shops on the front range have messed up your mounts?

I've never had a bad mount until this one. I just read about other peoples' horror stories on TGR of other places in CO.

REI also botched the mount on one of my legend pros too

You definitely do not want them +1 at your size P

they owe you new skis, period, and im inclined to believe that they will make it happen.
otherwise, bring them receipt and tell them they owe you the cash for the full cost of what you paid for the skis.

Then take said skis to edgeworks, get them remounted, and be happy for scoring a near free pair of some awesome skis.

and to you naysayers
I have had a great experience with the normal REI i usually goto when i have needed a mount in the past I wasnt able to do or just didnt have time for. Now I do all of mine. The Tech at the Lakewood store, off of Wads knows his stuff and has always done good mounts for me (His name is Dave)
The reason why I went to that other REI (Englewood) for the mount that they screwed up was because the Lakewood store had just gotten rid of all their ski mounting stuff for the season.

I've had skis mounted at REI in reno and absolutely no problems with them and its cheaper then in Truckee.

REI has the best customer service I've ever had, I'm sure you will get hooked up. I would think new skis.

My first ever mount was a pair of brand new karmas. It came out fine. The ultimate solution to all these mounting issues is to mount your own stuff. Doesn't mean you won't fuck up but then at least its nobody's fault but yours.

Besides after 2 mounts you have already paid for the drill bits and tap.

I understand the confusion. You know what the guy did? He made a mark on the boot 1cm back from boot center, then lined that up with the mark on the ski.

voilà!! Your bindings are one centimeter forward! I'd be pissed too, but you can't assume that a guy at a department sporting goods store knows what you are thinking.

That's why anyone that is way into skiing should learn to mount their own. It's really not that hard, and with a small amount of digging, you can get your own jig. The only other things that are required are a pozidrive screwdriver and a binding specific bit.

Uh, no. The only mark is on the ski, 1cm forward. On the form is written, "Mount 1cm back from center mark". I even asked for the shop tape measure, and with the guy that mounted them standing there, I found the center mark and measured 790mm from the tail and pointed to the mark on the tape and said "right there, 1cm back from the center". I thought with all of those confirmation steps things would be fine, so I didn't ask for a Sharpie.

Shaddup with saying "you idiot, he can't read your mind" when you don't have all the information.

Um, REI? Your going to want to not do that.

I use Edgeworks in Denver and occasionaly CO Ski and Golf if I just bought something there. So far I have not had any problems (knocking on wood, now knocking on wood again just to make sure).

I am picking up my re-mounted Mantras from Matt at Edgeworks in about one hour. I will let you know how it turned out. I can't personally phathom taking my skis to REI, their ski deparment does not inspire confidence.

yes, but what is the thickness of a sharpie line....1mm? 3mm? do you mount in the front of the sharpie line? the back?

I've never had a problem with REI's mountings, and this is my 4th REI mount. pech above has said much the same. I don't live in Denver, so Edgeworks isn't right down the road.
