Sun Valley Resort

Inbound Outbound: Sun Valley

Story by Teton Gravity Research

Tucked deep into the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho, Sun Valley is a cozy little mountain town with some incredible access to world-class backcountry and resort skiing. We're talking everything from laid-back lift-access laps at Sun Valley Resort to full-on snowmobile powered adventures deep into some of the wildest mountains of the West.

Inbounds

Sun Valley is a true mountain and winter sports paradise, tucked deep into Sawtooth mountains of Idaho. The resort is comprised of two separate mountains including lots of gentle beginner terrain at Dollar Mountain and 2,054 acres of powdery goodness on Bald Mountain. Skiing and riding at Sun Valley is all about the full-on resort experience, so indulge in the good times at any of the five day lodges, like the Roundhouse and its 360-degree views.

The resort experience, while luxurious, is decidedly low-key. Sun Valley runs deep with ski history which continues to thrive under the radar even today. The mountain is known for some of the best grooming and among the longest fall-line runs in the country, so get ready for some leg-burning hot laps under blue skies.

Out of Bounds

While the resort vibes might be a little more laid back, Sun Valley’s true adventure lies just beyond the boundaries. Step foot into the Sawtooth National Forest, and open your eyes to a world of backcountry skiing and riding potential. Take your pick between snowmobile-access laps in never-ending drainages, ski touring on Galena Pass, or an overnight hut trip at any of the countless huts and yurts deep in woods.

The terrain offers everything from stunning high-alpine bowls, to perfectly-spaced treeskiing, and plenty of cliffs and windlips to get some airtime on. We suggest hiring a local outfitter like Sun Valley Guides or Sawtooth Mountain Guides to show you around the backcountry safely. If you go out on your own, make sure to get familiar with the Sawtooth Avalanche Center’s daily bulletin.
