Who has had the biggest influence in your life? Why?
Probably both of my parents equally. And yoda.
Who or what has been the biggest influence on your riding? Why?
Definitely the people that were a part of the “newschool movement” back in the nineties like JP Auclair, Shane Szocs, Seth Morrison, JF Cusson, et al. I would watch them do all of these tricks in the terrain park, but my home mountain in Alaska didn’t have a terrain park, so I would go out and try to learn all of the tricks that they were doing in the park off of cliffs and windlips.
How did you cross over from amateur to pro, is there a story behind it?
I placed 42nd in an IFSA big mountain event... Apparently the judges weren’t too into my spinning-off-of-all-of-the-cliffs-in-the-venue antics, but the team managers for Rossignol and Smith both were, so I guess that’s what really mattered.
What other hobbies / activities are you currently into, what do you do when your not riding?
I cook a lot, and I downhill/freeride mountain bike in the summer. Plus I play music a lot, mostly guitar, but I like to play anything that makes sound.
Candle light dinner with girlfriend or McDonalds drive thru on the way to the mountain?
Candlelight dinner, then wake up early and make pancakes and hashbrowns pre-shred... I’m gonna be a great wife someday.
Where’s the last place you have visited outside the States? Any notable stories?
I went to Whistler for Camp of Champs most recently, but Canada only kind of counts... I went to Austria, Switzerland, and France for a few weeks this past season which was really bad ass. All of the reports that we had gotten from Europe were the same, not much snow, pretty rugged skiing almost everywhere. We went for it anyways, and right before we got there it started dumping in Austria and we got some full on cold smoke pow skiing.
What’s the last book you’ve read?
I am just about done with Shampoo Planet, by Douglas Coupland. But the last book I finished was Choke, by Chuck Phalaniuk.
Europe or AK?
AK. But I love Europe too.
What are you rock’n to on your I-pod / cd player?
Album:Everything all the Time, Song: The Great Salt Lake, By: Band of Horses
Favorite Album of all time?
There are way too many completely amazing albums to just choose one, but one that changed my entire view of music and why I enjoy it is “Selling Live Water”, by Sole. “The Creek Drank the Cradle” by Iron and Wine is on my top 5 as well.
Where do you see your sport in 5 years?
I don’t think I could even try to predict that, but definitely bigger, faster, steeper, spinnier.
What’s the scariest thing that has happened to you while riding?
When I broke my thumb in Switzerland, it was one of the most intense experiences of my life.
Where’s your favorite place to ride? Why?
I like the Chugach Range in Alaska. I feel the most at home there, it is where I learned how to ride, so my style of riding comes from there, and I feel the most comfortable standing at the top of a line there over anywhere else that I have been.
What’s the Best Trip you’ve been on?
Probably the Euro trip this past season.
Favorite Movie: Luck Number Slevin.
Thongs: trend or a mainstay in female fashion?
For the sake of hopeful thinking I’m going to say mainstay...
Any parting words?
