RIP....truly one of the Alta legends. I am very fond of all my years at Alta and the history that is modern skiing in the US. I would encourage anyone spending time in Alta or Utah to go poke around the library above the firehouse; there is some really great stuff there. Alta is truly a magical place with many passionate people.

RIP. I feel lucky to have met her in Silverton while in college. She was the real deal.

"If it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down." ~ D. LaChapelle

Crazy thing is that quote has been in my head every time I piss since 1996.

Kinda spooky that a couple of us were talking about her just yesterday and for some reason I thought that she had died already - and then on that same day she passes.

RIP Dolores, I wish I had met you.

I met her once about 10 years ago or so sitting in the chairs next to Alta Java sunning herself. Cool lady - RIP, you spent your time here well.

WTF?! No news on this in Durango's paper this morning....fucking losers, I hate the Herald.

Anyway, I filmed an interview with her a couple years back for a film class I was in (I think I've still got the footage somewhere)... she was an awesome person. RIP Dolores

I skied past Dolores on the Animas River Trail last weekend in Silverton. It was a cold and windy afternoon as the sun was setting in the canyon. As we crossed paths she gave me a sweet smile and I remember thinking she had such a vibrant look at that moment. She was skiing up until the very end in a place that she loved. She was an inspiration to all of us in the San Juans, especially us women. RIP Dolores.

strange i'd never heard of her until yesterday when somebody responded to the reading material thread. then somebody thought she was dead, and now she is.

i guess i'll have to read her book first.

The first year that I taught at the Silverton Avalanche School, I was "invited" to a party at Delores's house (along with most of the residents of Silverton). There was a full eclipse of the Moon happening, that was the reason for the party.

I remember talking with her about powder skiing as we drank wine, while standing outside in -10f weather, watching the eclipse happen. She was a really interesting lady.

    RIP Delores....

Powder snow skiing is not fun. It’s life, fully lived, life lived in a blaze of reality. What we experience in powder is the original human self, which lies deeply inside each of us, still undamaged in spite of what our present culture tries to do to us. Once experienced, this kind of living is recognized as the only way to live–fully aware of the earth and the sky and the gods and you, the mortal, playing among them.

    Great quote. RIP

Man, I wish that book wasn't out of print. I love good skiing literature.

165 bucks at Amazon for a used copy. The only used copy around.

    Time to reissue it.

    ((((Dolores))))
