    Thule -- NEVER AGAIN!!!

I bought a Thule Adventurer roof top box several years ago.
Last time I used it (over a year ago) I had a lot of problems getting it to unlatch.
I'm finally getting around to using it and went to see what the problem was.
The piece that holds the lock assy in it had worn out and was allowing the whole lock to rotate in the housing.
No problem, just a small piece, shouldn't cost more than a couple bucks and easy to install.
    Call Thule parts/customer service.
Was told, "We don't make those parts available."
Excuse me? What do you mean?
"We don't make those parts available", he repeated.
Not, "We don't have them", it was basically, "We have them but won't sell them to you."
He had no answer when I asked him if I was expected to buy a new box because he won't sell me a $3 part to fix it.
If I do, it damn well won't be a Thule.

I'm not terribly surprised. It already blows my mind how insanely expensive rack and box systems are. There is little to no competition with only two players. Yakima seems to have a better attitude.

It sounds like if a car dealer were to tell you "Your car door lock is broken? We don't make replacement car door locks available. You have buy a new door... 4 new doors... and a new ignition system because the new keys for the new doors will have new security chips."

I've had good luck going through thule.com to get replacement parts; had their system for over 10 years.

If you've ever tried to get spare parts for an older car (the box he had isn't new) the dealer often doesn't carry them. Often times the distributor won't carry them either, so you need to go to a 3rd party, who will often charge you more because carrying lots of inventory is expensive. That's life.

cj000f I agree, HOWEVER, not having parts is different than having parts but refusing to sell in order to make you buy a whole new product that cost ~25x as much as the replacement part. The latter is what the original poster says the situation is and that is some major lameness if true.

    www.racknroad.com

    Try these guys, seriously.

I didn't look but it wouldn't surprise me if the part was actually listed on their site. If it's not call their central number. If they can't help you, try calling the stores directly. I have had very good luck (i.e. free small parts) from the Bellevue, WA store.
