Cataloochee Ski Area to open Saturday

MAGGIE VALLEY – Let it snow!

Cataloochee Ski Area plans to start making snow Thursday and Friday nights and will open on Saturday, said Tammy Brown, public relations director for the ski area in Maggie Valley.

“The conditions are perfect to start making snow,” Brown said this afternoon. “We could be the first ski area to open in the East. This is the earliest we’ve ever opened.”

Typically, ski areas in Western North Carolina open around Thanksgiving weekend. Cataloochee will open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:40 p.m. Saturday, weather conditions permitting. Saturday’s forecast is calling for partly sunny skies and a high of 54 degrees.

Brown said the resort plans to open two beginner slopes and will charge weekday rates of $27 for lift tickets and $16 for rentals. But, she said, skiers should call before coming out.
