Mammoth 4/30/05 Summit TR

Slim, Smally, and myself rolled into Roberto's parking lot in Mammoth at around 8 pm or so on Friday night. A few drinks later and a few maggots finally met, we roll to about 5 more bars with the troup leader, Yoga, stringing us along. At the final venue, Smally ends up moshing to the punk band and almost fights a guy 10 times his size, and so we soon roll to the condo to get some needed rest after hiking Carson Pass earlier in the day.

We snuggle into Squirrel's room on the floor. However, we barely fall asleep beacause of Squirrel's ever numerous attempts to get us to spoon him on his "King-Size" bed.

In the morning, the S's: Slim, Smally, Snorkeldeep, 666, Spats, and Squirrel were skiing together for most of the day. A few laps with Shane-O and Arty was as much maggotry we were able to consolidate. At one point there were about 30 maggots at the Gondola mid-station, but the skiing logistics would have been nightmarish, so the S's toured the mountain.

Here's what Mammoth looked like:

I drank a pot of organic coffee and then saw this:

Smally in Phillipes (Mammoth name noob here, not sure if I'm exactly correct but its the far skiers left off of Chair 23, into lower part of Star Chute)

And then in a typical Smally fashion...climb up into the gnar:

He's on rock at this point...Squirrel and I get nervous:

I followed Smally into the exposed line on looker's right...got to trust a kiwi:

So now Smally wants to hike up this wall inside lower star chute to hit a straightline on the other side:

...he wants to get his money's worth on the lift ticket. Squirrel helped him by raising the Bid Daddy's up the rock face:

A ski patrol was next to me while we watched Smally ski this. He told me that its probable that its never been skied before:

What a wicked day! Nice to meet and ski with some of the maggots.

...and so after the incredibly inept waiter at the Yodeler finally gave us the check..we headed back to Tahoe to hit the closing day of Kirkwood.....the very next day.

Doesn't look like slipping on the rocks would have made for a good ending much higher up.

There was also this random guy who entered Star and ended up with a slide for life over these rocks plus a bunch more out of view below

As he dropped in, he looks over at us and says, "Last year my buddy got hurt real bad dropping in here. I'm glad you guys are here to make sure I get out okay."

Then we watched in horror as he tumbled down at high speed! (luckily, he's okay- just a broken binding and some shaken nerves!)

I'm definitely gonna have to make it down to Tahoe for some storm skiing next season.

i suppose ill add a TR later today - back at work again which is of course nuts. the weekend was a blast though - great skiing with 666, smally, squirrel, slim in the am until i went to the gondy and they went to 23 (oops.). We came back over from hemlock just in time to see smallys line out of star.. freaking awesome bonerific sickbird and all that. part of what i love about skiing with the maggots is that im always getting pushed.. i really wanted to get back to that top of the world line that 666 and geoff skiied later on - but unfortunately i guess its goign to have to wait until next time. what a weekend!

For two reasons. One, LA sucks. Two, despite the insane snow pack, we barely broke average for precipitation in the Sierras. I think it was the first year in like 8 years or something that we weren't below average for precipitation. We just have bomber snow, hence the name Sierra Cement, that packs in great and doesn't melt off to easy.

Edit: I think the guy with the skis in that photo is severly confused by what he sees.

Just got word from Smally, who's in BC, Canada.....said he passed out at SFO with a stomach virus, but I think it was because he left his wallet in my car.
