Moment Big Mountain Rocker Review

I got to ski these suckers at Rose last Sunday, and dammmmmmmnnn...

Basically, it's an M1 with a rockered tip. The Moment rep was gracious enough to let me take them out for a few laps and I was happy to take advantage of this. I got a couple of laps next to Zephyr and a couple in the Chutes.

The best way I can describe these skis is big mountain slayers. While the Commis have a picture of a tank on them, skiing these is like having a tank battalion at your command. They're extremely burly and it's very noticeable the second you pick them up. And despite my best attempts to avoid rocks, I did manage to hit a couple (sorry guys). When I gave them back though, there was barely a scratch. Very impressed.

As for the ride, they're extremely damp and right away they give you the feeling that you can crush anything in your path. They're just so unbelievably stable. The rocker is extremely nice too. With most super stiff skis you have to worry about tip dive and such. Not so with this ski. It lets you absolutely charge while floating too.

The best part...they're very manageable. I was fully expecting them to absolutely kick my ass. Not so. For a ski of this size and burliness, they're fairly nimble.

Overall I was extremely impressed. If you're ever at Mt. Rose, talk to the guys in the Zephyr lift shack. On the weekends (not sure about weekdays) they'll be demoing Moment skis. Hopefully they'll have these around for awhile too. Awesome, awesome ski.

PS, the bases are every bit as pretty too.

They are actually more of a 192 cm. If you stand the M1's up to a pair of 193 Sanouks....they are about the same size.

I've got the M1's (non-rocker) mounted and ready to go. Had to spend last weekend on the Comi-Kazis...maybe I should write a review? But seriously, do they really need one.

I didn't realize they were demo-ing them; I saw all the skis in the Zephyr shack with the ghetto hand-written sign but didn't know I could take one out.

As I was loading the dude was like "What skis are those?" When I told him Praxis he gave me a smile and then said I needed to try out the Moments, "Made in Reno." I was all "Truckee Eastside, Dog" and we flashed gang signs at each other until I was stabbed by a snowboarder.

Well, there's a good chance I'm using the word damp wrong. If damp means lifeless dead feeling skis...like Atomics...that's not what I mean.

More like it's the most solid feeling ski I've ever had underfoot. You can still feel what the ski is doing and how it's running in the snow, but it's much less affected by the snow than say a Gotama or something relatively softer. I skied my Gotamas for most of the day and so it was an interesting comparison. The snow was a little on the heavy side, and my Gots (which have a lot of days on them) weren't liking it so much. The Moments just rallied through it all. You're more working the snow than the snow is working you. But at the same time it's not unforgiving and it's definitely not dead feeling. They're like raging beasts with a sssensitive side.

not calling you out at all, I'm trying to find a 105-110 under foot ski for next year and can't find anything. It seems that under foot strata doesn't have too many offerings that are 190+ in length.

Probably because they are stiff as fuck. Easily a 9 on the flex scale.

But they're more like an M1 Abrams than a Sherman.

The first time you pick them up you're like, "Oh fuck, what am I thinking. I'm going to get my ass handed to me." But they're not like that at all. Go demo a pair, you'll see...

Tons of camber, super thick, and ridiculously stiff...almost like a Blizzard Titan Pro stiff.

ok i think your using it wrong

. for example both squads and head supermojos are both superstiff stable as fuck skis designed for essentially the same purpose, yet skiing on them you'll find they're totally different. the heads are very damp they feel smoooooth you just cruise along with out much response from the ski where as the rossignols are very lively almost playful, every bit of energy you put in the ski is returned. So where would you put the moments on a scale of damp to lively

I have no idea how to answer this, since I don't have much time on uber stiff skis.

I'm thinking a flex scale would look something like this:

Supermojos.....Squads............................. ..................................Gotamas
Damp.............................................. ........................................Lively

I'm guessing they would be somewhere in between the first two.

They definitely have a super smooooov, damp ride; but I wouldn't say they're "I'm going to fucking kick your ass every second of this run" unforgiving either. They're nowhere near as "playful" as my Gotamas though. The lack of a beat down was surprising (at least for me) since they're so stiff. Does that help, or should I just go crawl back into my hole?
