VAIL, Colorado — A person died in an avalanche in the East Vail backcountry Friday, said County Coroner Kara Bettis.

Vail Mountain Ski Patrol recovered the body, Bettis said.

The identity of the victim is not yet known, Bettis said.

It is not clear if the victim was a man or a woman, or if it was a skier or snowboarder, she said.

Resort spokeswoman Jen Brown confirmed that there was an avalanche, and that Ski Patrol responded at the request of the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office. Brown did not have additional details.

The Sheriff’s Office did not immediately return phone calls Friday.

Anyone who skis there knew this was coming and most were surprised it took so long to happen.

There are SO MANY PEOPLE there these days who don't know the area, don't know how to guage the danger, or don't even have the gear

I just hope it wasn't someone skiing on top of someone and that this won't close access.

I once had a guy who was out there by himself point down into Marvin's and ask, "If I go this way will it take me back to the lift?"

The crown or the debris pile? I've never dug a pit 8 feet deep....I'll admit it.

Very sad. There are a lot of people with no avy knowledge back there, but there are also a lot of knowledgeable people who ski that area like it's part of the resort.

Either way it's terrible someone lost their life.

AIL, Colorado — A 27-year-old local man died Thursday when he was trapped in an avalanche while skiing out of bounds above East Vail, authorities said.

The man was skiing in the East Vail chutes with two others, who had avalanche rescue equipment and were able the dig the man out after he was trapped, the Eagle County Sheriff's Office said.

The other skiers performed CPR, the Sheriff's Office said.

The man's name is being withheld until his family is notified, the Sheriff's Office said.

Resort spokeswoman Jen Brown confirmed that there was an avalanche, and that Ski Patrol responded at the request of the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office. Brown did not have additional details.

Ya this is no good and as SUMMIT said I hope it wasn't from someone else skiing on top of others lines because they didn't know where to go. People need to understand that just because someone else has skied that area doesn't mean its safe. Don't follow people you DON'T KNOW!!

I was actually buried in of all places tower chute because some idiots skied the open face above us. We were almost out of the chute and into the trees. Luckily my buddy had just got out of the way and i kept a hand out for quick recovery.

    It happened today aka "Friday"

Sounds like it was a local guy with two others with rescue gear, and not a paper ticket gaper with no clue. Tweeners is betw. Marvin's and Old Man's, kind of a shoulder rather than a convex bowl, right? I think because of that it's viewed as a safer line than some others.

Could've easily been any one of us.

Very sorry to hear of another fatality indeed...If anyone on here was involved, or know the people involved and they need someone to talk about it, it would probably help me out too. I'm still coping with losing my buddy to an avy a little over a month ago. I know all too well how traumatic this event was for those involved, so don't hesitate to reach out and talk to people.

Yep. Whats with all the folks on this board that instantly assume it was some inexperienced goo that caused the slide?

I'm just hoping its not someone I know.
