Angry Alta sometimes blows me away....and I don't mean in a good way

Is it true Alta charged full price, $59, yesterday, and only had the Collins, Sunnyside, and Wildcat chairs open?

I had a couple buddies from out of town call me all pissed off about Alta. I had told them for sure Alta wouldn't charge full price as they had limited terrain open just like all the other resorts. Guess I was wrong.

I guess when they got to the GMD ticket window and found this out they stormed on over to the Bird. Not because of the price, but because of the nerve of Alta to charge full-on price for early season conditions and terrain.

Fortunately for them Wilbere opened up yesterday and spread the crowds out and they didn't have to wait much in line in exchange for their 42 bird bucks.

In the single line I waited 1-5 mins yesterday and got plenty of face shots on my first 3 runs at the boid. The ten runs I got before work were the best all year, of course.

The thing that was always nice about Alta for years (and the way I would sometimes rationalize going there) is that even though it had a thousand less vertical feet of skiing, was a few hundred acres smaller than the bird, and mostly had slow chairs, at least it cost less.

Now that their day pass price has joined the big boys I can't see how they can continue to wonder why their revenues have lagged the big boys for years.

I hear ya man, but $59 for a day ticket is pretty reasonable compared to most resorts with close to Alta's prestige.

Not that I'd pay that, but many places are almost $80.

waaaah, then dont go. Lots of resorts in utah have been charging full price for the last two weeks to ski limited terrain. Solitude was charging full price for moonbeam and eagle express with like 4 runs open, is that any worse?

The problem with Alta is not that it is expensive. It's more along the lines of it being a half-assed mountain. I worked at alta all last season and every second of free time I would go to the bird. It doens't surprise me they charged full price. They are deep-rooted jackasses over there. Living in the past that never was.

well, I'll be the first to say, shit, KMart is charging more than that right now.
And the only face shots are happening in bedrooms in far flung condos at night.

Endless do you remember the day we skied Alta last season and major parts remained closed due to so called “avalanche danger and avalanche control work” but not a single employee in sight doing any avalanche control work to make any afternoon opening possible.

Sometime this place really sucks big time

It's OK. Atleast, you know that all of the "legends" are skiing ALTA!

C'mon ALTA is the shit. Also, I bet that over 50% of the people skiing ALTA right now, are season pass, or atleast, silver card holders.

I'm stuck at The Canyons. Right now, I wouldn't be skiing there everyday, if I didn't have a season pass.

    59 dollars?
Quit crying. It snowed 40 inches since thursday. Off of Collins AND Wildcat there is plenty to play on. Half this board pays more than 59 dollars to ski on 1/3 of what you got.

It was posted on their website since opening day that's all that was going to be open and tickets would be full price. If you don't like it, don't go. Considering the parking lot has been totally full and lines have been crazy lately, I guess it's not that big of a deal for a lot of people.

Alta basically fucking blows. That's why I'm spending my winter at Snowbasin.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

I'll be there again in 4 weeks. I don't know what they're charging at the window, but we're paying 57 per day for 4 or 5 days.

And....there's no comparing Alta to the 'Ride. It's a totally different experience. When that place has pow I prefer Chair 9's 3000+ feet of non-stop pleasure all the way down to the base any day of the week. The highest lift-served point on the Collin's side of Alta (top of Collins) is less than 1900 vertical feet from top to bottom. I feel like I'm just getting started at Alta when I hit a flat spot and have to traverse to the next little drop.

Anyways, this is not a Alta against the world thread, it was just a little rant about their pricing and their attitude when the way things have changed all around them it's clear they are no longer in a position to justify that attitude.

C'mon, Endless - how often was Gad II open last year? I think I've been allowed in Thunder Bowl ONCE... then again I'm not local enough to check daily.

(And do you really need to keep promoting the 'Bird? Do you want all those Fartbags over there?)

My mistake, Tipp, if I am inadvertently promoting the bird. I've posted many, many times the ten or so NA ski areas I like more than the bird.
It's just that I'm not promoting Alta, and they'll do fine with or without people like me calling it like I see it.
I hear of the conversations from upper mngmt at Alta trying to keep up with the revenue increases of some of other Utah resorts. They're not gonna do it by continually raising prices w/o greatly improving the product.

My local hill currently has about an 8" base. I'd be happy right now to pay $59 to ski half of Alta.
Shut your eyes and think of somewhere. Somewhere cold and caked with snow.

    I like this thread!!

I see cars with Alta stickers on them and I tell my kids to piss on emm (I got arrested when i did this, but the cops are reluctant to arrest my kids, especially the 4 YO, although he did punch one in the balls once, and almost got tossed in the pokie for that)

Sure Alta gets snow, sure Alta has history, sure Alta has some excellent skiers there and goods to be had, but to pay 59 dollars to snowboard a mountain that is 99% posers, i'd never do it.

I was going to say pretty much what Altagirl said.

By how many people that were in the parking lot this weekend, no one seems to mind about ticket prices. The pow is worth it Endless...you should know this.
