Yes, it's a definite visual improvment.
I was hoping to get a reply like yours. Some mang this weekend told me that the 8.6 skis much differently (stiffer, faster ski), I thought he might be full o shit, that's all.

I have been on it all year and was on the 84's last year. I went from a 185 to a 180. Yes they are stiffer but in a good way softish tip then stiff pounds through crud. Better groomer preformaance as well. I think that they are abetter allrounder. The only draw back is they are heavier which shall change for next year (they also get uglier next year).

Thanks for the info Wiebo, that helps a lot.

I just picked up a pair a couple of weeks ago. Love them.
had an interesting circumstance of being with out them and having to demo the seth pistols.
For obvious reasons the Pistols make landing hits simple. but for pure speed in all situations the 86...well 86's everything else. I skied everything, the PRs, the b3's, R11, Rex's.

I haven't skied the old '84's but tried the new 86's compared to most everything out there. I wished they had made a 185cm. I'm 5ft 9 and 160 and found the 180cm too short and the 190cm a wee bit too big although I definitely would have bought the 190 as I actually felt the ski overall was rather soft. Much softer than say Rex, G4, Head Monster.
Thought the 190cm was awesome on groomers, but the 180cm just too short.
I'm surprised that people say they are stiffer because my impression was the old one's weren't exactly soft and I definitely thought the new one's were soft. This is a very different feeling ski than other stuff out there. He who has the most fun wins!

Can't speak for the 84's but the 86's have proven to be a super all around all mountain ski for me. Probably not the best choice for huge lines in the back country but excellent in any other conditions you'll find.
I'm 5'11" 175 and skiing the 190's
for comparison I am on a 195 Stockli scott schmidt when the big stuff hits the rotor blades.

bumping this up. i've picked up a cheap pair of 8.6's and am trying to decide whether to mount them or move them on, i'd love to hear from more people who've skied the 180.
fwiw, i'm 5'10" 170 lbs, not insanely aggressive and am planning on using this as an all-round alps stick (i.e. can handle ice and weird snow, but isn't overly stiff).
