Just patting myself on the back

Towards the end of this last ski season, I realized I was getting fat, not morbidly obese, but having a wife that is an awsome cook and a 3 year old son, I just was not watching what I ate or exercising, and before I knew it, I'd gained 50 lbs since we were married 5 years ago.

I realized that if I wanted to feel good and be a better skier, mountain biker, kyaker, etc, I would have to shed some weight. So the first week of april, I started a new way of life. I joined a health club got weighed in and got some measurements taken.

April 4th: I am 6'2" and maxxed out at 252 lbs. Mens Size 38 pants.

I have been working out religously, watching my food intake, and have been an entirely more active person. I have not used any personal trainers or specific diets, no low carb bull crap, just sensible dieting and exercise. Today I visited the office at my gym to talk with the trainer, and got weighed, etc.

As of today, I have dropped nearly 56 lbs since I started working out and am now to what i consider a reasonable weight for my frame.

July 16th: 6'2" weight: 196 lbs. Mens size 34 pants.

I have found my performance in all aspects of my athletic endevors, mainly biking and kyaking right now, to be 100% better, and I can't wait till ski season.

    Moral of this story:

There are just over 3 months till the snow guns for the ribbon of death, and there is plenty of time to get in shape for an upcoming season of fun. Thanks for listening. I'm havin the time of my life.

Congratulations. I thought it was weird that you were selling a bunch of pants over in Gear Swap, but I get it now.

I hope I can serve as an inspiration to someone. I did it for myself, but I am finding that everyone around me is seeing that it can be done.

Everyone notices the obvious transformation, I really didnt, until I looked at my pants and the fact that when i had to take a dump, I could pull em' down belt buckled and all. Needless to say, I had to buy all new pants, maybe gearswap is a good place to get rid of all my old 38 specials.

    Thanks for the good words.

    Right on!

After too many years of eating whatever I want and assuming the exercise I get would keep me in shape I made up my mind to eat right. So since March, I've been eating right (small balanced meals every 3 hours, no overprocessed food, no trans-fats, artificial sweeteners, not more than 2-3 beers a week, etc.) riding more than usual, and now seriously hitting the gym for like a month and a half. My arc'teryx pants now fall straight off my ass, which is cool except for the fact that I'm gonna need new ski clothes and I'm broke... I'm now the same size I was when I was 17, though, which is nice. It's definitely helping with riding and I can't wait to see what it does for my skiing...

sweet deal AG - It really is amazing what a few months of serious work ethic and sensibility can do do the human body.

I know a lot of peopkle that over teh years have gained and lost and repeated the cycle. This is the first time in my life that I ever had to really work at keeping in shape.

My wife is proud of me but has to give me shit for needing to get all new clothes. I hate spending money for non-skiing related things. Ever since I started paying my own way, I've never been the type to spend money on myself, especially clothes. I feel like some sort of "metro" going shopping and getting an entirely new wardrobe. Always wearing brand new clothes and stuff.

Yeah I can't wait to rip the chit outa the hill this year. If I can plan my trip to Missoula this year to coincide with teh summit, I may make that for a couple of days.

Oh yeah and POST number 200. Member october 03. and thats all I've got, I gotta stop lurking so damn much.

I can take a hint. I've been suffering from PAFAS - post accident fat-ass syndrome - and now it's time to get my act together.

    Great job Indy and AG!

No kidding. I tried them on and told Mr. AG "Look, I'm Tanner Hall!". Ha.

Mr.AG just seemed to think I was weird for trying on ski clothes in July.

    Nice work everyone!

Since i've been in Jackson...well, i'll just say that i've had to retire a couple pairs of shorts, some pants, my ski pants have no chance of staying on, and my one and only pair of bike shorts i have out here are falling off when i ride, as they are too big. Needless to say, i'm pretty stoked about it. Riding my ass off and hiking everyday sure does pay off...along with the fact that i can't stand the food here at the lodge, that helps out too.

    w00t w00t for trimming down!!!!

Ummm.... I have the opposite problem.

I can't eat alot of dining hall food. It's too boring. I just can't bring myself to eat more than two plates of pasta and a salad at every meal, along with my entree.

I've lost like ~10 pounds in the last 3 weeks.

    I'm 16.

I'm 5'10''. I weighed 160-165. I'm now 150-155. I'm trying to gain weight. And even eating like 5 slices of pizza a day at like midnight and lunch and dinner I'm not getting anywhere. In fact, I'm losing weight . Ideas?

I'm also lifting, sculling, and sailing along with the occaisonal hour long run. Ideas?

get married to a woman who cooks great and stop being so damn active. That will do it.

However it isn't good advice. I don't know if eating pizza at midnight will help either. The negative consequences of shoving bad food in your gullet will outweigh any benifit you feel from maintaining proper weight.

Maybe you should try some of thos bulk-up supplements.

I've never needed to gain weight so this is coming from the wrong guy.

Also your metabolism will change as you get older, you'll bulk up in a few years. between the age of 15 and 18 I grew 10 inches and gained 40 lbs.

    give it time.

Seldon, it's all about steak, pasta, and milk. You will gain weight fat with that type of diet. I had mono a year ago and lost more than 35 pounds. Just don't do too much running and stuff when you work out, and lift more wieght with less reps.

    great job!

it's always a good feeling to get to buy new (smaller) clothes, esp. ski stuff . You deserve to reward yourself for the job well done, and good stuff is motivation to stay at that weight.

I'm still not anywhere near my college weight, but don't really care - that seems unattainable at this point anyway, and I'm stronger now, which is better.

but I have been complacent with the gym routine lately -gotta hit that harder again & firm up.

    seldon,

Be patient. I'm 5'10" also. When I was 15 I weighed 135. The most I weighed in College was 148. I was very active and competed in gymnastics during that time. My weight dropped back down to 140 when I stopped competing. Consider yourself fortunate to have a fast metabolism. Many people are jealous of this. If you can try to judge yourself on what your body is capable of doing rather than what you weigh or how things look on the outside you will probably be happier. By the way, when I reached my mid 20s I filled out to 160. Be patient, one of the best ways to gain weight is to get 10 years older. Now nearly 20 years later, I currently weigh 170. I have no problem hiking up at 11,000 feet to ski and earn my turns.
    Enjoy an active healthy lifestyle!
