I say if whoever dies trying to beat it, it's still JPs record.

This is already getting out of hand. Is surviving a pre-req for claiming the record still?
edit: blurred beat me to it.

This may have been covered already ....... but ...... at what distance do you hit terminal velocity? I am pretty sure they are nearing that point, once you get there the sky is the limit
"Is it necessary to disdain the affluent Escalade driver in the ski area parking lot just because he never threw caution to the wind and gave up work, meat, and let his hair grow in the surreal international sojourn of powder skiing and self-actualiztion?"
WELL OF COURSE, thats why I am me and you aren't

rode a tram with him last week at the bird......very nice guy; absolutely no 'tude at all......as compared to some of the contestants for the comp we noticed.

That would be "Giggidy...Giggidy..."

My fears from that first thread are coming true. This will not end well - some records don't need to be broken.

If the guy goes off a booter for instance, his velocity is actually negative in the down direction, which is the way you would measure terminal velocity. Then he'll pass through vel = 0 and continue to accelerate until he reaches terminal velocity, which he'll sustain until he hits the ground. If he's in a vacuum, like on the moon for instance, he'll just continue to accelerate until he hits the ground.
Go back to your basic equations of motion. It's all right there, derived from F=ma...

There is no Terminal Velocity in a frictionless environment... you would continue accelerating until you hit something (most likely the source of the gravitational force.) Terminal Velocity is where the friction of the air slowing you down cancels out the propulsive force of gravity. You fall at a steady rate of speed.
Edit: DAMN YOU, SheRa!

huh?
accelleration due to gravity is 9.81m/sec^2 which is roughly 32.2ft/sec^2.
and a velocity of 36FPS is actually around 24.5MPH.
you just flunked your physics lesson for the day.
you are correct about terminal velocity for a human in a freefall position to be around ~120mph.Last edited by cmsummit; 02-09-2006 at 10:26 AM.

So instead of attempting this sort of ski stunt at 10,000ft, wouldn't it be more feasible to try it at a lower elavation where the air is more plentiful? A coastal mountain range such as one in AK might be the place for one to break that new record....

What others have said. Put simply, "terminal velocity" doesn't mean that it's so fast you die. "Terminal," here, means final -- as fast as you can go given the environmental factors.
Also, for record-setting, what are the criteria for the landing -- survival? walking away? clearly not sticking the landing, since Pierre apparently did a perfect one-point.not counting days 2016-17

From a little research, it seems that it takes about 9 to 10 seconds to reach terminal velocity in an arched skydiving position. That's a lot more than 300 feet of falling.

cmsummit, nice work. Thought everyone out of high school knew that
number. What kind of a record is falling 220+ft off a cliff and landing on your
head, I just don't get it. Might as well play Russian roulette.
