Truckee to Squaw tour/hike - May 20
After canceling a Southern Sierra trip Fri night due to weather concerns, I need to do something. So woke early today and decided to try a trek I have always wanted.
Stats:
Cold Stream Canyon (in Truckee) to Squaw
Approx 20 miles
7 hours 30 min
Actual Turns (without skins).....0 (until at Squaw).
It was more about the experience than the skiing.....No action shots.....just scenic.
There's some snow up there still.
Lots of river crossings.
Love the purity of snow.
The route up Cold Stream Canyon....you can see Truckee down below.
The Bradley hut at Anderson Peak.....things are looking good for snow.
Then turned the corner, and things were looking poor.
Luckily things got more consistent (notice the Palisades in the distance).
Cool rainbow thing.
Then I came across some really fresh bear tracks.
Finally looking into Squaw (Solitude, Shirley, and Granite are in view).
Finally into Granite.
The VIP cliffs.....a somewhat little know Squaw area.
After 7 and 1/2 hours, Squaw was nice enough to let me ride Shirley chair for free.

Too bad you had to nix your original plan, but way to come up with an alternate walk/ski. You getting a storm, or is it too hot, or what?

Looks like a pretty sweet day in the mountains . . . bummer the trans-Sierra fell through though. What's with bad weather in May? It's California for crying out loud!

Nice work Huck!
Way to stay active locally!
I had planned on heading south too but the weather just didn’t cooperate.
