    The Ski Bum

Where Johnny's money comes from is never established, but he has enough if it to go skiing every day.

    The Ski Bum
Speaking of 70s and ski bums, for whatever reason I thought you were in the central valley in CA.
Last year there was an interesting article about a skier from Modesto who skied all over before disappearing in the winter of 1970, and genetic testing figuring out where he ended up.

I came across that same story in a different writeup a few months back. Interesting stuff.

Who knows, maybe Gardner Smith was one of the stunt skiers in The Ski Bum?

    Gotta love the duster!

Zalman King, who plays Johnny, became the king of Hollywood soft porn (Red Shoe Diaries), and co-wrote and directed 9 1/2 Weeks (Mickey Rourk) and the big-surf drama In God's Hands, starring Shane Dorian.

A few years later, he picked up TGR on his radar, and we worked with him to develop a never-realized TV show / film concept called "Tribes". I spent a couple of weeks at his house in Santa Monica living in his guest cottage, writing and going out at night with him, several times to the burlesque club he owned with Clooney and Ivan Kane called 40 Deuce. The guy was a prince, and probably the coolest and most honest person I ever met in that weird industry.

Charlotte Rampling was a smoke show back in the day.

Did David Duchovny accompany you on your outings?

Fascinating background, thx for sharing. Who passed through the 90's without identifying Zalman King with Red Shoe Diaries? (Even if you had no fucking idea who Zalman King was, other than some dude with a really healthy libido.)

If anyone's curious the pilot, which predated the Showtime series by a few years, is on tubi. It's a hoot.

Even based on just a few seconds of footage in that clip you can tell the guy in the duster is a really good skier, super smooth! Got me curious as to who it actually was, so I started with the surprisingly complete cast and crew credits page on IMDB, and that led me to this...

Freestyle expert Skeeter Zoberski, of Warren Miller's Winter People fame, doubled Zalman King for Johnny's serious action shots.

Which I found here, which is from this book.

As one of the reviews on the Amazon page says, that looks like a really great crapper read!

Anyone know more about Skeeter Zoberski?

I'm still too much of a greenhorn around here to know if that's a joke or not, but if true some making-of stories would be fantastic!

If anyone's interested, Winter People is available to stream (with ads) on Vudu if you have an account...

It's also currently available to stream here...

EDIT: There's a 12 minute segment at 1 Hour 3 Minutes into the video featuring a Hot Dog competition at Vail. They apparently did the transfer from a scratchy old film print, but blown up fullscreen it still looks pretty good!
