Damn I'd love to make it down there, but won't happen this year.

Anyone been to terminal cancer recently? Will be driving by this weekend and thought maybe I'd check it out, but last beta I have is from nearly a month ago.

If you do head up Lamoille Fleaches, please snap a pick of Mt Gilbert and post it up here. That peak's been on my hit list for a while now. A broken alarm clock thwarted my last effort at it about 10 years ago. Thanks in advance.

Did a quick trip to Terminal Cancer during my Utah to California drive last weekend. Road is clear to the Thomas Canyon Campground, so you can park across from TC and cross the river right there. There is snow just about all the way to the river. I don't think anything had gotten a refreeze the night before (and maybe even a little rain), but the snow inside the upper couloir was soft without being too wet or sloppy. Much more grabby down low, especially in the unskied flanks. Little bit of avy debris near the bottom but easy to ski around. There is a big cornice on lookers right that could potentially fall into the lower 1/2 of the couloir. It's possible to stay a little to the left of the gut in the highest danger zone at least (and that was where the bootpack went).
I also found an ice axe on the way up in case it belongs to anyone here, but forgot to grab it on the way down (sorry). It was at the very bottom little rock band before the steeper climbing began, although I can't promise the next group didn't grab it.
And Xover here is a view down towards Gilbert

Thanks for the beta Fleaches Looks like I should've gotten my ass out there last weekend. That choke may or may not go .... ??? For historical purposes:
Terminal Cancer 15 years ago to the day (2008). Skied top all the way to the creek. Worst bushwhacking I've ever experienced coming from the campground. Made Crow's Foot feel like it was a walk on your neighborhood sidewalk.
Gilbert same trip
Photos of same from 2010 or 11'ish trip are at home on broken computer, but both lines were SUPER phat that year!!
Same day 2020. TC.
Gilbert.
Just goes to show how volatile those lines can be. I've got a couple other objectives in more Central NV that I spotted 3 years ago during low snow years that I've been keeping my eye on too."... she'll never need a doctor; 'cause I check her out all day"

Nevada thread deserves a bump. Current conditions in TC are quite good.

you know, it's been a few years now since I've been on top of my game but when I am I'd consider myself a pretty damn fast skier but Josh D. fucking scares me. Not only is his skiing scary but he does this shit in remote back country locations.
Here's Josh getting filthy on some obscure face in the middle of bum fuck no where Nevada.

Charleston thursday and friday.
Hey looking for anyone who would be down to do some touring around mt charleston this Friday. I was hoping to climb at rr before a wedding this weekend but thats not happening now obviously. Ive never been up there and would love some company. Im hoping the there is enough snow right now too so any insight would be appreciated too. Im spilt boarding if that matters. I got a shovel, probe, beacon, radio, saw, and know how to use them all if need be. Going to check out wild horse canyon Thursday afternoon if i get to town early enough. Stoysluttie, Powstash, and some others did similar from floor of Death Valley in about 2007…. One of those crazy Stoy trips starting below sea level and ending up at 11,000ft

I gotta be in Elko April 9-11 for a training. I'm thinking about skiing something on either end of the training. I guess TC is the obvious choice but IDK crap about the area. Also, while technically not in Nevada, I am going to see about Mt. Patterson in the Sweetwaters one of these days. It only about an hour drive to the dirt from my house.

By no means a local, but spent a week there in 2020 and two days in 2016.
Generally it seemed Thomas Canyon in the Lamoille area held better terrain than the Right Fork.
The Right Fork does have Mt Gilbert and also good terrain at the head of the canyon, but it's a long approach.
Thomas Canyon has a great variety of lines closer to the road.
They've had a great snow year. Coverage won't be an issue. Outlook looks good for more snow and cold temps for the next two weeks.
I believe the heli op is done for the season, so there will be less tracks and less noise. Your timing looks good.
The Rubies are gorgeous! Enjoy.

I freaking love Death Valley! Might be time to tag the top of Gilbert this year ....??? Hopefully the choke is in.
