What is growing on my Marker Bindings???

Has anyone ever noticed a white foamy substance that appears to grow on the scratched up areas of Marker bindings? Takes at least a few days to appear or grow, possibly a few weeks. I live in Portland, Or. My assumption is it is some sort of reaction with something in the air, but maybe it could be some sort of bacteria or mold? The substance feels like a very light foam, it goes away at the first touch, and feels like liquid soap after you touch it. The four photos show before and after wiping away of the foam growth.Click image for larger version.

That looks like a yeast infection, aka candida. You can google pictures. Wipe the affected areas with Monistat 7 and it should clear up in a day or so.
This belongs in Tech Talk though.

Yeast infection?! Ooohhh ya buddy! Run out for this. If it doesn't clear up in a few days see a specialist. No itching!

Why would only the marker bindings be affected by this infection? All my skis are stored in the same spot in my garage. It is somewhat damp due to humidity and environmental factors of winter in the NW, but I do not have rust forming on my metal edges.

That's the end-of-life indicator. All Markers do that.

Those metal parts are magnesium, aren't they?

It's a non-caloric, silicon-based kitchen lubricant that marker uses to grease up the plastic and keep the bindings snow free. It was developed by food additive scientists in the Chicago area and has really good applications for winter recreation due to its hydrophobic properties. It is originally designed to keep things "crunchy" in an aqueous environment. But that didn't appear to be a viable use. It was a better lube.

I'm surprised you didn't know this.

In all reality I bet the plastic is breaking down and deteriorating into a shock sensitive explosive. In other words they're going to blow up.

The amount of trolling going on right now is staggering, but I kinda hoped for that. I am leaning towards the magnesium and water vapor causing a reaction theory at this point, I do agree, the bindings do appear to be made of a magnesium alloy. I did consider smoking the white foam, but we have a lot better alternatives here in Oregon that are perfectly legal, healthy and certified to get you altered. Taste can be reported as tart, bordering on sour, with a metallic mouthfeel.

Dump that batch and start over after you sanitize everything it touched.
