I bought a pair but I am not a fan of the guitar playing skull. I like the rest of the ski tops but its a little "hellbent-ish" I'm sure all the cool kids want this though.

^^ Not even close. They look amazing in person. Love the hand flex of the mid/stiff and am super impressed by the quality. Even Oliver approves.

I have some older Protests. You're going to love those.

Trying to decide whether to mount +1 or +2 on my 187 protests. I realize there isn't much of a difference and I would most likely be safe either way. Anyone have a specific reason to go with one over the other (specifically for the 13/14 model)?

I believe the protest design has remained the same since 11/12, but the mount point changed this year 13/14.
I skied one day on a pair of 11/12 187 protests at +1 from the dimple in 1 foot of consolidating grand targhee pow. I have jester demos on the skis, and am going to play with 0 and -1.
I'm 5'8" 170 lbs, and skiing with alpine boots.
11/12 protest product sheet says dimple at 10 cm back of boot center for 187 cm.
13/14 protest sheet says dimple at 8 cm back of boot center for 187 cm.
So i tested 187 protest at +1 from 11/12 mount, which would be 9 cm back of center, and I'm thinking of keeping it there or going back to 10-11 cm with a demo binding.
Depends on your skiing style...mine is somewhat traditional.
But your +1 to +2 will on 187 13/14 protest will be at 6 or 7 cm back of center.
I don't know if there have been any changes to protest design since 11/12 except for mount point recommendation change which happened for 13/14.Aggressive in my own mind

Just for more context. I have a pair of 177 12/13 protests mounted with dynafit vertical ft12's, and skiing those with titans (bindings mounted at +1 from dimple, dimple at 10 cm from ski center) .
I mounted them up late last spring and got two runs in off of glory in pow conditions (6-12")
The mount felt a touch forward.
I'll ski them again this year before making any adjustments.
I bought toe shim plates from B&D, and may use those to reduce ramp ange (wouldn't need to drill any new holes.
For 13/14 protest is a 177, the dimple has been moved forward 3 cm (from 10 to 7 cm behind ski center).Aggressive in my own mind

Demos are the tits.. which is to say, it would be cool if my skull had tits....
I prefer a more forward mount (but not center) but Marker demos are going on mine for sure.

hoarhey, thanks for the info. That is very helpful. I didn't realize that the 13/14 mount had moved up from prior year models. I am now thinking recommended line may be perfect given it is +2 from the prior year mounting position.
Thanks again!

They have arrived.. Pretty sick ski. Build is precise, clean and well put together. Graphics are much nicer in "person".
Medium+ flex is just about perfect, I would say its pretty much the same as a BentChetler.
Rocker is more than you think but not too much rise/splay; pretty quick reduction in splay over long run and not pronounced in the tail; more abrupt splay at end of tail with fairly shorter run.
Both tip and tail are pretty soft but stiffens up more quickly than a Bent.
Underfoot, above the toe and below the heel are fairly stiff
Mount dot looks very good. I need to play around but the location in relation to the camber looks to be spot on.
Actual tip to tail on the 187 is exactly 73" or 185.4cms
These are going to be exceptional skis.Be more like your dog...

I bought the ninja 196 protests (2011) they had on sale a few months ago. I will be mounting them next week. They do not have a dimple but a red line instead. Is +1 or +2 the ticket on these babies?

Wait really? And you all are talking about going + on the mount? Am I missing something?
I have 11/12 187s, on the line. When I measure it's a tad less than 10cm from ski center. And although I had a mind blowing day on em last season, in variable/chunked up stuff I wanted to be able to drive/run them harder upfront. I've really been thinking of going -1 or more.
(I come from Lhasa land where front wheel driving is mandatory so maybe it don't know what I'm doin on these skis?)

another candidate for adjustable bindings; one point does not fit all.

I am in the same boat as you (I think Jim S also mounted his protests behind the line or back of 10 cm).
Yes, most have been saying that for the 187 protests, people liked +1 from the pre 13/14 dimple, which is 1 cm forward of 10 cm, so 9 cm behind center.
I, like you, want to try these at +10 or even +11 (which is at the dimple or -1 on pre 13/14's)Aggressive in my own mind

played around a bit more with my Protests:
this ski has more going on than meets the eye. the camber is positioned beautifully extending down behind the heel in a way that's got to give this ski a lot of energy. Damn, the camber seems dialed.
The carbon layup is the way to go. There's a lot of pop to this ski (given its on top of 2 layers of thick springy carpeting for soft snow simulation)
I also noticed the sidewalls are vertical at and below the underfoot area (traditional torsion box zone for lack of a better description) but tapered into step-down in the underfoot zone. This should provide more/better energy transmission and make it a bit more responsive.
Damn impressive ski. And the graphics are growing on me
AND, there are tits on the tail!!Be more like your dog...
