My sincere condolences to his family and friends.
It’s not often you see someone so well suited to the lifestyle and career they have chosen. He was truly inspirational to watch.

I always hoped this day would never come. Shane was, in every sense of all of these words, the coolest, raddest, nicest, kindest, most thoughtful and most inspiring person I have ever met. I can't believe he's gone. We will all miss ya buddy, the world will never be the same without you - thanks for forever changing all of our lives for the better.

Wow. I've used rockered or full reverse skis for almost every day the past two seasons. Many is the time I too - even as a bona fide hack/gaper - whispered a little "thank you" to McConkey while looking up at a field of powder I'd just skied.
RIP...

Terrible, terrible tragedy.
A very sad day. Pouring out some beer for you, Shane. Time to celebrate your life and what you've done for skiing.
Sincerest condolences to his family and many, many friends.

Sucks. Every time I watch Roner and those guys jump I think about how close to the edge they live. RIP.

He pushed the boundaries of everything thought possible, while at the same time reminding skiers everywhere not to take themselves to seriously.Preserving farness, nearness presences nearness in nearing that farness

Every man dies. Not every man lives.
You don’t stop playing because you grow old; you grow old because you stop playing.

I never met the guy, but from everything I knew about him I wanted to be just like him. Not that I have 1% of his talent - I wanted to be the guy who had endless stoke, got psyched for everyone else's good times, had drive to push himself without taking things too seriously, and wasn't afraid of going for it - and going big, all the time. It seemed like he had cracked the code for living the good life, and that didn't even have to include being the best skier ever. This is a very terrible loss and I am so sorry for those who were close to him.

Oh, my. I met Shane when he was hellbent on leaving Vail and I was all atwitter about just having arrived. We met at a NYE party, got shitty drunk, and he told me to enjoy myself immensely, work on my skiing if that's what I wanted to do, then follow him out to Squaw (or Jackson - he hadn't quite decided yet.)
RIP, Shane. I've lived my adrenaline rush by proxy through your exploits for nearly 2 decades. Sorry I never made it out to Squaw like I promised.

According to wikipedia:
"On March 26, 2009, Shane was BASE jumping in Italy. His ski failed to release, getting caught in his parachute and sending him into an uncontrollabe spin."eating and sleeping is serious business
