Follow up discussion by the Vail Daily editor is here:
http://www.vaildaily.com/article/2009901039966
Some very funny commentary...
"The head of Vail Mountain, Chris Jarnot, called in Saturday, furious that we published the photograph.
He had spoken with the skier, who was understandably traumatized by the experience of dangling off the chair, figuring this would be how he ended his time on earth."
"Here is what was in my mind in approving publication:
1. Is it news? Unless people routinely dangle upside down off chairlifts, the answer is an inescapble yes."
"To me, the picture documented a moment, a scary one for sure. We all could identify with the skier’s predicament and feel for him; there’s no stigma in an accident. And no one would know who he was by looking at the picture. "
You can comment to the editor what you think of it at the above link...

Found the cached article (minus the picture) on Google:
Vail photo: Over-exposed on the slopes
Skier got stuck in a revealing position while riding up the Blue Sky Basin chairlift on Vail Mountain
A skier got stuck in a revealing position while riding up the Blue Sky Basin chairlift around 10:30 a.m. Friday. Mountain personnel spent about 15 minutes trying to throw him a rope over the chair so the skier could pull himself up but then backed the chairlift up and pulled him down. After he was rescued, he got back on his skis and went back up the slopes.

I can't think of a better thread to make my first post. That is some of the funniest shit I have seen in a long time.

I've seen gapers flail their way onto a chair and flip the seat up in the process, causing a similar issue (minus the junk show of course). So I wouldn't be surprised if the guy or the other passenger did it. Entirely within the Seinfeld-esque parameters of the story. Kramer (flailing wildly) and George get on the chair, Kramer knocks the seat up while Costanza is focused on what sandwich to eat (or maybe a latex salesman job?), and then Costanza falls through the chair with his pants down, subject to major shrinkage. It all makes sense now.

This guy needs to capitalize on this. Interviews with all sorts of skiing magazines can be had, The Daily Show could run it, Weekend Update on SNL, Maxim, SI, etc. Has this guy hired an agent to hand his 90 seconds of fame?

And then today there was this gem in the VD's 'letters to the editor'
What gives with the paucity of groomed runs? Only one or two per lift since we arrived on the 29th.
I’ve been reading hints in the Vail Daily about the resort being in trouble, but this is no way to get more customers. My family takes a ski vacation two or three times a year. We decided to try Vail again this year, figuring it would be less crowded than years past.
It does seem to be less crowded, but its difficult to find many runs my whole family can do together, since so few are groomed.
I just checked Whistler, Park City and Big Sky. Big Sky has only a few per lift, but Whistler has 67 groomed runs, and Park city has 40. Is this some kind of austerity program to economize?

Oh My God! After the last few weeks of constant gaper-fest, this pic has made it all worthwhile.
A+!

Nothing weird about that. From now on I'm going tighty-whities, base-layer, boxers, then outer layer just in case...
This is a good point. A spaced out lifty didn't notice the seat was down as I was getting on a detachable at Kilington yesterday. I had more than enough time to flip it down myself and load the chair safely.
Yeah, I know... I'm awesome. If you've never seen an elephant ski, you've never been on acid.

a friend of mine was there that day and sent me the following email:
I was out boarding with a few friends at Vail and started up the
skyline express lift when we noticed a huge queue. Turns out a guy and
his kid jumped on a chairlift that had the seat folded up and ended up
getting his pants caught and somehow fell forward. He was dangling
like a slab of beef for at least 15 minutes while the lifties tried to
get him down. The whole situation went from bad to worse exposing the
twigs and berries or in this guys case just the berries. He kept
trying to pull his jacket up to hide. Fighting gravity is tough
though! Must be doing a "Silence of the Lambs" impersonation if you
know what I mean. Check out the look on the lifties face!! Not how
you want to start out the new year!

Those newest pictures are priceless! I do feel bad for that guy and his kid. I used to work that lift. There's going to be a high price paid for not paying attention and flipping that chair.
Looks like the liftees are still wearing the blue DNA jax from like four seasons ago. And, I guess after this settlement, they will be wearing em for the next decade +.
