TR: My first day out with the Canon 100-400

It took some time to decide if I wanted to get the Canon 70-200 IS 2.8L or the Canon 100-400 IS 4.5-5.6L. I finally chose the 100-400 to put on my crop 40D.

Here are a couple of images from the weekend.

Good stuff man. Looks really sharp. Would you mind posting a 100% crop of the eye/beak area of #1?

There you go Smalls. I've been shooting in sRAW so the image is about 1/4 a full RAW file.

    What flash are you using?

Why are you (or would anyone) shoot sRAW?

    No flash.

Why shoot in sRAW? I just got a new lens and I knew I would be taking a bunch (300) test shots to get used to the new glass. Once I get used to how it runs I will switch back over to RAW, but I didnt really feel like switching CF cards or having to worry about that.

    The obligatory duck shot eh?

I assume you won't be shooting much indoor action stuff?

I made the same choice, 100-400 on a 20D (replacing a 70-300). I'm loving it. Wingshooting is a bit tough, but static-pose or walking wildlife is great. Using the lens with the body's AF modes took some getting used to. The color, acutance, and pop are all first-rate. Canon's done a good job selling me on L glass.

You're correct. No low light shooting with this one. It is a bit slow without light (lots of light), that is the only drawback, besides for the fact it is a monster of a lens sizewise.
