per TSA regulations it would likely not be permitted:

Tools (greater than seven inches in length) Carryon:No Checked:Yes
You may, or may not, be able to carryone on.

    Search function, jong.
    Most sources say no.
    Beacons are hard enough.
    Probes are pointy weapons.
Shovels? well not sure why they are afraid of shovels, but its a security thing.

if you are tempted, go early enough to turn around and check your bag.

On Euro flights the shovel, probe, and rope were a definate no for us. My beacon went through as carry on. Put the rest in your checked luggage.

Nope. I got turned back with a shove and probe... then they found explosive residue in my patrol pack. Luckily the security guy was a skier.

Funnily enough I just took one on a plane today. The guy was cool but said next time I should pack it in the check in bag or it'd more than likely get confiscated. Being well over baggage allowance I had everything metal in my carry-on.

Last year Dogger got thru with the blade, but they confiscated his handle?

You just never know what hair TSA will get up there ass. Last year they confiscated $100 worth of wax out of my checked bag, said it was flammable?

Anyone taken an Avalung backpack on board with them? Of course it's harmless, but who knows how TSA would react when they saw something unusual like that.

Haven't had any problem travelling with a covert pack. Last trip home I tried to bring a 30m rope and they had a shitfit so I checked the pack and they ended up ripping the chest strap off. Black Diamond graciously replaced the pack under warranty.

I'll ask the Bozeman TSA and bag check people tonight (I work for Delta)...I guarantee they've run into this before here.

OK, TSA guys say definitely check the shovels and probes; the reasoning being the shovel (when extended) passes the 7-inch rule for an assembled tool. The probe, they said (after I explained that it resembles a tent rod), "well, if it was with a bunch of tent rods and stakes then it'd probably be OK, but since it's not, check it". So, yeah.

As for the tranceiver, that's okay, it can pass screening just like any other piece of electronics - in the bin, through the x-ray. If they give you any guff about it transmitting, guess what, so do cell phones and they're legal.

Just don't do a beacon check on the plane Keep turned off going through security and on the plane. So far I have had no problems. SLC airport seems used to them. Burbank was a little less sure.

I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...
